Tamil Leaders Urge India to Support Accord Implementation

Post by : Shakul

Sri Lanka's Tamil political leaders are urging India for continued efforts to ensure the effective realization of the Indo-Lanka Accord, a pivotal agreement aimed at fulfilling Tamil political demands amid the country's civil turmoil.

In a recent meeting held in Colombo, Tamil representatives voiced grievances about the slow progress in devolving authority to provincial councils and emphasized the necessity for real political autonomy. They conversed with C. P. Radhakrishnan, who reiterated India's established stance advocating for devolution in line with Sri Lanka’s constitutional system.

The Indo-Lanka Accord, which was initiated in 1987, resulted in the adoption of the 13th Amendment to Sri Lanka’s Constitution, establishing provincial councils and enabling limited power-sharing. Nevertheless, Tamil leaders contend that these provisions are yet to be fully enacted, especially regarding land and police powers.

They also brought up the significance of conducting long-overdue provincial elections, seeing it as a vital measure to restore democratic representation at the local level. Historically, India has been instrumental in fostering political reconciliation in Sri Lanka, particularly following the civil conflict's conclusion in 2009.

Tamil parties have stressed that ongoing diplomatic efforts from India are crucial to ensure the Accord's commitments are upheld. They believe that a stronger implementation would promote long-lasting peace, equity, and stability within Sri Lanka.

This meeting underscores the persistent regional endeavors aimed at resolving outstanding ethnic and political challenges, with both parties recognizing the necessity for dialogue and cooperation in procuring enduring solutions.
