Three sizable vessels, comprising two oil supertankers and one LNG carrier, have opted for an alternative maritime route along Oman’s coast to exit the Strait of Hormuz, indicating a notable transition in navigation strategies as regional tensions escalate.
Operated by Oman Ship Management Company, these ships were observed moving eastward and announcing their Omani registry. Unlike the usual northern route near Iranian waters, they followed Oman’s southern coast.
This maneuver is significant, especially since the Strait of Hormuz has faced substantial restrictions due to geopolitical disputes. Iran has permitted limited passage through its territorial waters under stringent oversight, potentially imposing fees, which could reportedly reach $2 million per journey.
The chosen path for these vessels is situated south of the standard international navigation lanes, avoiding the narrower northern route, which is crucial for larger tankers that need deeper channels and more expansive navigation areas.
Each oil tanker is believed to be transporting around 2 million barrels of crude oil, while preliminary tracking indicates the LNG carrier may not be loaded. The vessels ceased transmitting their position near the Mussandam Peninsula, raising questions about their complete transit status.
The shift also underscores the growing complexities of maritime monitoring, with reports of signal jamming and spoofing complicating accurate tracking of vessel movements.
These developments have a broad impact on global energy markets, considering that the Strait of Hormuz is one of the most vital oil transit routes worldwide. Any changes or disturbances in traffic profoundly influence oil supply infrastructures and pricing on an international scale.
