US Reduces Tariffs on Brazilian Food Products to Alleviate Costs

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a strategic effort to lower expenses for consumers, President Donald Trump has expanded tariff exemptions for various Brazilian food items, which may decrease grocery expenses for Americans facing inflationary pressures.

The executive order, enacted on Thursday with retroactive effect from November 13, lifts the 40% import tariff that Trump had applied earlier this year to numerous food products. The previous 10% exemption introduced last week didn’t address the elevated punitive rate, a tactic by Trump to exert pressure on Brazil related to legal matters concerning former President Jair Bolsonaro.

As the leading exporter of coffee and beef, Brazil's exports to the US had declined due to these tariffs, leading to increased costs and ongoing shortages in vital markets. Coffee, orange juice, and beef will likely see the most benefit from this exemption, helping relieve financial burdens on American households.

This tariff reduction is a notable success for Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has consistently advocated for the removal of US duties. High-level talks between the two countries revived following a brief meeting between Trump and Lula in New York in September, followed by discussions in Malaysia where Lula called for a definitive resolution regarding tariffs.

Unlike many countries affected by Trump’s trade policies, Brazil typically has a trade deficit with the US, a fact frequently highlighted by Lula. The policy shift indicates a growing awareness in Washington about how tariffs have impacted consumer prices, especially in essential food services.

This change comes on the heels of elections where living costs were a significant concern, hinting at a focus on affordability for voters. Economists argue that relaxing import tariffs on goods not sufficiently supplied domestically can alleviate inflation while continuing to uphold a broader trade framework.

With the new tariff exemptions enacted, American consumers may soon experience some relief at the register for Brazilian coffee, beef, and orange juice, marking a rare retreat in Trump’s extensive tariff policies.
