Thailand's Education Sector Gains New Administrative Authority

Post by : Shakul

Thailand’s Ministry of Education has embarked on a significant administrative reform aimed at bolstering the efficiency and effectiveness of the educational infrastructure. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to enhance collaboration and speed up the execution of policies within various educational divisions.

Minister Prasert Chantharawongthong has officially authorized Deputy Minister Akranan Kankittinant with substantial administrative powers. This new delegation allows the Deputy Minister to represent the Minister in a variety of operational duties, indicating a transition towards a more responsive and agile governance structure.

With this new role, the Deputy Minister is now empowered to issue directives, authorize practices, approve educational programs, and oversee vital divisions. This encompasses the Department of Learning Promotion, the Institute for the Promotion of Science and Technology, Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, the National Institute of Educational Testing, the National Scout Office, and the Office of National Education Standards and Quality Assessment. The primary objective is to streamline decision-making processes to enhance lifelong learning and scientific education.

In addition, this reform indicates the government’s commitment to modernizing the educational landscape by emphasizing scientific and technological education and reinforcing national assessment frameworks. By centralizing critical operational powers under the Deputy Minister, the Ministry aims to develop a more synchronized approach to policy application and institutional coordination.

Nonetheless, the delegation of authority comes with specified constraints. Any intervention requiring royal endorsement, intricate policy decisions, legal stipulations, or issues that need to go before the Cabinet or Prime Minister will still be managed by the Education Minister. This provision ensures that vital decisions maintain the requisite high-level oversight.

Furthermore, the Deputy Minister must report back to the Minister once tasks are executed, fostering transparency and accountability throughout the ministry. This reporting mechanism is put in place to balance operational flexibility with necessary oversight, enabling the ministry to operate smoothly while adhering to governance standards.

Implemented on April 16, 2026, this reform is poised to boost collaboration among various educational bodies and enhance service delivery. It underscores the Thai government's dedication to fortifying its education system while adapting to the evolving demands of both national and global educational landscapes.
