In a significant move, Thailand’s Ministry of Education is rolling out new measures to safeguard students’ rights to education, emphasizing the importance of academic records even amid unpaid fees. This decision follows the Cabinet's acknowledgment of recommendations from Thailand’s National Human Rights Commission.
Education Minister Prasert Chantarawong has mandated that schools, under the Office of the Basic Education Commission, cannot deny graduation-related documents to students due to outstanding tuition. The ministry underlined that access to educational documentation is a constitutional right, necessary for higher education applications.
Minister Prasert highlighted that preventing students from receiving certificates may hinder their ability to register for the 2026 academic year and could exacerbate dropout rates. To address this, the ministry will provide comprehensive guidelines to enforce this policy and promote the “Zero Dropout” initiative to retain students in the education system.
Authorities emphasized the need for collaboration between educational institutions and families to explore financial solutions, rather than neglecting students’ access to educational opportunities. The government views the safeguarding of educational access as vital for fostering equality and sustainable national advancement.
In conjunction with these educational reforms, directives from the Prime Minister urge the Education Minister to collaborate with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, and the Ministry of Labour to implement a comprehensive national AI development strategy.
With part of the 200 billion baht budget package, the government aims to enhance AI skills and technological proficiency in its students and citizens. This initiative is designed to prepare the workforce for future industries and elevate Thailand's competitiveness within the global digital economy.
Minister Prasert stated that artificial intelligence is now a national priority, promising to transform the capabilities of the Thai populace moving forward. The ministry is focused on developing a roadmap to enhance digital infrastructure, update school curricula, and equip educators and students to thrive in an evolving technological landscape.
With these efforts, officials aspire to create a resilient education framework capable of fostering innovation, advanced technologies, and future economic growth, while ensuring equal educational opportunities for all Thai children.
