MRT Fare Subsidy Scheme Launches in Thailand on June 1

MRT Fare Subsidy Scheme Launches in Thailand on June 1

Post by : Shakul

The Thai government has unveiled an extensive relief program dubbed the “Thai Helps Thai Plus 60/40” initiative, designed to provide subsidized fares for MRT users through the Paotang app. This scheme kicks off on June 1 and is set to run until September 30, 2026, encompassing four major MRT lines within Bangkok.

As stated by the Mass Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), this initiative aims to alleviate the financial pressures faced by citizens during the ongoing global energy crisis exacerbated by Middle Eastern conflicts. It is anticipated that this program will support individuals in managing transportation expenses while also promoting the use of reliable and affordable public transit.

The subsidy will apply to the MRT Blue Line, MRT Purple Line, MRT Yellow Line, and MRT Pink Line. Under this arrangement, the government will cover 60% of the fare, leaving passengers responsible for just 40%. The financial support is capped at 200 baht per person daily and a maximum of 1,000 baht per month throughout the four-month duration.

Commuters can access these benefits through the Paotang app at all MRT ticket stations from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Users must navigate to the “Thai Helps Thai Plus 60/40” section, scan a QR code at the station counter, confirm the transaction, and obtain their single-journey ticket prior to boarding.

Eligibility for this scheme is limited to Thai nationals aged 18 and over at registration. Individuals holding State Welfare Cards or those who have faced prior suspension from other co-payment initiatives are not eligible. To assist with inquiries about registration and usage, multiple helpline services have been established.

The MRTA has indicated that all involved MRT operators are ready for the program's launch and expect enthusiastic public engagement during the subsidy period. This initiative is viewed as a step to enhance commuter trust in the urban transportation system of Bangkok while reducing daily travel costs for numerous users.
