Thailand's Action to Safeguard Young Monks

Post by : Shakul

The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security in Thailand has initiated urgent measures to safeguard a group of Thai minors who traveled overseas for a summer novice monk ordination program and became embroiled in legal troubles. Minister Nikorn Somklang confirmed that they have completed welfare protection protocols for the affected children, now focusing on their safe return and long-term rehabilitation.

As reported, the children, aged between four and fifteen, were detained alongside multiple suspects in early April while attending the program abroad. Following this, the Thai Immigration Bureau alerted the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, requesting immediate action to ensure the welfare and legal rights of the children involved. Authorities swiftly coordinated with provincial offices and child protection agencies to commence assistance operations.

Minister Nikorn Somklang noted that investigations revealed most of the children had valid passports and appropriate travel documents. Provincial Social Development and Human Security Offices implemented screenings under Thailand’s National Referral Mechanism to ascertain if any of the minors were victims of human trafficking. Officials confirmed that there were no trafficking cases among the children, allowing for the initiation of reintegration and family support processes.

The ministry indicated that those who have returned to Thailand are now in the care of Provincial Children and Family Shelters. Officials are collaborating closely with the children’s parents and guardians to evaluate family readiness and set up safe custody arrangements. Social workers are also performing home visits and follow-up monitoring to ensure the children receive proper emotional support and protection upon their return.

A handful of minors remain overseas due to lacking passports and are needed as witnesses in ongoing legal proceedings. Thai authorities anticipate their return by June 2026 after the court process concludes. In the meantime, officials are actively coordinating with foreign jurisdictions to ensure the children’s safety and welfare.

The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has also established comprehensive case management strategies covering education, healthcare, family welfare, and financial support. They plan to engage with schools ahead of the children’s return to facilitate a smooth transition back to education. Health checks, counseling, and temporary shelter support will also be organized during the rehabilitation phase.

Minister Nikorn underscored Thailand’s commitment to reinforce child protection systems and enhance international cooperation in managing cross-border child welfare matters in the future. The government aims to develop more effective mechanisms to safeguard children involved in overseas activities and ensure that families have access to long-term social and economic assistance when necessary.
