Ajwain, or carom seeds, is a staple in many Indian kitchens. Commonly used for flavoring, ajwain is also recognized for its purported digestive benefits, including alleviating gas, bloating, and acidity.
To explore these claims, I committed to drinking ajwain water each night for 21 days. This piece recounts my experiences and insights gleaned during this period, alongside essential tips for those considering a similar regimen.
Ajwain water is prepared by soaking or boiling ajwain seeds in water, allowing the beneficial compounds to infuse. It’s believed that these natural oils and components can aid digestion and promote a healthier stomach.
Typically, ajwain water is consumed:
Before bedtime, or
On an empty stomach in the morning
In this experiment, I exclusively drank ajwain water every night for 21 days.
The preparation was straightforward and natural.
Process:
1 teaspoon ajwain seeds
1 glass of water
Boiled for 5–7 minutes
Allowed to cool slightly
Consumed warm, without sweeteners
This routine was maintained nightly for three weeks.
In the initial days, the most notable change was in digestion. Early reports suggest ajwain water has a calming effect on the stomach.
First-week observations:
Decreased gas post-meal
Less bloating
Feeling lighter in the stomach
Less nighttime acidity
Drinking ajwain water appeared to relax my stomach, making it easier to digest rich or heavy foods, alleviating discomfort.
In the second week, my digestion stabilized, leading to better sleep as less stomach discomfort interrupted my rest.
Second-week observations:
Decreased acidity-induced burning sensation
Fewer sleep disruptions from digestive issues
Improved morning bowel movements
Reduced reliance on digestive aids
Ajwain water acted gradually, promoting digestive stability rather than immediate relief.
By week three, improvements plateaued, yet general comfort levels increased.
Third-week observations:
More consistent digestion
Less fullness after meals
Less late-night snacking
A prevalent sensation of lightness
Some suggest ajwain water may help reduce water retention; while I didn't experience significant weight loss, there was decreased bloating-related weight.
Throughout the 21 days, I also noticed ajwain water seemed to aid with:
Mild stomach pain
Post-spicy food digestion
Halitoic breath from indigestion
Improved gut health
These results emerged gradually.
It's essential to set realistic expectations—ajwain water is not a cure-all.
It did not:
Lead to rapid weight loss
Address serious medical conditions
Replace a balanced diet and exercise
Work identically every day
Its role is supportive, not curative.
While ajwain water is natural, it might not be suitable for everyone.
Individuals who should exercise caution include:
Pregnant individuals
Those with stomach ulcers
People with highly sensitive digestion
Individuals on long-term or potent medications
Excessive consumption of ajwain water may result in stomach irritation.
Moderation is crucial.
Recommended daily intake:
1 glass per day
Optimal at night or early morning
Exceeding this amount isn’t advisable.
Ajwain water is more effective when coupled with healthy practices such as:
Consuming a light evening meal
Avoiding greasy foods at night
Staying adequately hydrated throughout the day
Regular meal timing
Without these practices, jeding ajwain water alone may yield minimal benefits.
Making ajwain water a nightly ritual over 21 days can gradually aid digestion, mitigate bloating, and enhance overall stomach comfort. It functions slowly and naturally, rather than as an immediate remedy.
Ajwain water serves as an advantageous addition to daily health, rather than a replacement for conventional treatments. Regular intake, in moderation, may foster better gut health and assist in nighttime digestive ease.
Every individual reacts differently—what is effective for one may not yield the same results for another. Notice your body's responses and adjust accordingly.
For those searching for a straightforward and natural approach to enhancing digestion, ajwain water can be a beneficial part of a conscientious daily routine.
This article aims to provide general information. The experiences described are personal and may differ for others. Ajwain water is a traditional remedy and should not replace professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Consult a healthcare expert before incorporating ajwain water into your routine, especially if you have digestive disorders or are currently on medication.
