Vietnam’s prominent leader, To Lam, has declared a resolute commitment to combat corruption and accelerate economic growth during a critical gathering with senior Communist Party members in Hanoi.
At the national congress convened on Tuesday, Lam emphasized that Vietnam must adopt a firm stance against misconduct within government ranks. He cautioned that factors such as corruption, inefficient spending, and sluggish decision-making were undermining public confidence and hindering national progress.
“All inappropriate actions must be addressed seriously,” Lam urged the nearly 1,600 delegates present. He called on officials to minimize bureaucracy, enhance discipline, and ensure that laws are effectively implemented rather than just written.
Significant Party Congress
The weeklong congress, held every five years, stands as one of Vietnam’s most pivotal political events. It will determine the country’s leadership and establish economic and policy objectives extending to 2030.
Currently serving as the Communist Party's secretary-general, the highest position in Vietnam, Lam is speculated to be eyeing the presidency, potentially granting him comprehensive control over both party and state. Analysts predict that this could empower him to implement significant reforms.
Economic Growth Target
Among the main objectives articulated at the congress is the aim to expand Vietnam’s economy by a minimum of 10 percent annually through 2030. Party leaders believe this ambitious growth is essential for enhancing living standards, safeguarding national interests, and bolstering Vietnam’s stature in international trade.
Lam asserted the need to eliminate redundant regulations and promote international trade to foster economic expansion. He underscored the importance of the private sector within the economy and the need for a supportive and transparent framework.
Ongoing Reforms
Since his assumption of power around 17 months ago, Lam has initiated rapid changes within the government structure. His reforms have involved the elimination of bureaucratic layers, the closure of numerous ministries and agencies, and the reduction of nearly 150,000 positions from the state workforce.
He has also advanced significant infrastructure projects, particularly in railways and power systems, to fortify long-term development.
Confronting Challenges
Lam identified that the congress is convening during a period of great difficulty. Vietnam faces challenges posed by natural disasters, increasing global security threats, and disruptions in energy and food supplies.
To address these issues, he mentioned that the country needs to invest in infrastructure capable of withstanding climate change and enhancing connections with both regional and global markets.
Documents reviewed during the congress acknowledged persistent issues of weak law enforcement and slow action, calling for stricter discipline to regain public confidence.
With ambitious promises and clear goals, To Lam has indicated that Vietnam is poised for a new era of reform, centered on transparent governance, robust growth, and enduring stability.
