Tom Steyer's Unprecedented $195M Ad Investment in California Governor's Race

Tom Steyer's Unprecedented $195M Ad Investment in California Governor's Race

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Democrat Tom Steyer has kicked off an unprecedented political ad campaign in the U.S. as he vies for the position of California's governor.

AdImpact reports that Steyer has already allocated over $195 million across television, radio, digital, and cable advertisements. This figure is set to grow as the June 2 primary approaches.

Leveraging his wealth from his days as a hedge fund manager, Steyer's advertising expenditures dwarf those of his nearest Democratic opponent, Xavier Becerra, by more than twentyfold.

On a national scale, no other candidate has come close to matching his expenses. For instance, Republican Rick Jackson in Georgia has spent about $83 million on his gubernatorial bid, while Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has put in nearly $31 million.

Critics have been vocal about Steyer's extensive financial outlay, labeling it an attempt to buy the governor's office. Katie Porter, a former U.S. House representative, underscored that she wasn't putting in hundreds of millions to claim the position.

His expenses have shattered previous records set in California politics. In 2010, Meg Whitman’s failed gubernatorial campaign saw expenditures of $178.5 million, once deemed the costliest in the state's history.

Despite the hefty spending, a clear lead has remained elusive for Steyer, with polls indicating a competitive race among several key candidates, including Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton.

Steyer's financial backing has enabled continuous advertising on platforms like television, radio, YouTube, and Instagram, including payments to a progressive influencer for online support.

In response, Becerra has launched counter-campaigns aimed at leveraging voter fatigue from Steyer's relentless advertising, urging voters to support him to “stop the endless Tom Steyer ads.”

The California gubernatorial election features over fifty candidates on the ballot, under the state's “top two” primary system, which allows the two candidates with the most votes to advance to the November general election, regardless of party alignment.

Political analysts suggest that Steyer's significant spending could still sway the outcome in such a closely-fought contest. Democratic strategist Andrew Acosta remarked that, in competitive elections, every slight edge counts.

Yet, historical trends suggest that hefty campaign funds don't always translate to victory. For instance, billionaire Rick Caruso spent over $100 million in the 2022 Los Angeles mayoral race but lost to Karen Bass, while former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg invested more than $1 billion into his 2020 presidential campaign before withdrawing early.

Steyer did not gain traction during his 2020 presidential run, despite considerable spending.

As voters approach the gubernatorial election, they confront pressing issues such as homelessness, escalating housing prices, wildfire insurance, state budget dilemmas, and surging costs for essentials like groceries and fuel.

Steyer, who has no previous electoral experience, defends his political expenditures by stating he won’t apologize for his business success, asserting that money cannot solely dictate election outcomes.
