After a month-long personal leave to manage a family issue, goalie Joseph Woll will be back with the Toronto Maple Leafs. His rejoining is a morale booster for a team facing numerous injuries and a challenging start to the season.
Captain Auston Matthews shared his enthusiasm following the team’s recent 5-3 defeat to Buffalo. “It means a lot,” Matthews remarked. “He’s a significant part of our roster, so we’re thrilled to have him back.” Woll's presence is anticipated to uplift both teammates and supporters.
The 27-year-old Woll, a 2016 draft pick from Boston College, is entering his fifth season in the NHL. Last season, he notched a career-best 27 wins in 42 games, making him a valuable component of the Maple Leafs’ goaltending strategy.
Prior to his leave, Woll was set to split goaltending responsibilities with Anthony Stolarz. During Woll's absence, Stolarz handled most of the workload but struggled, compiling a 2-4-1 record while allowing four or more goals in four matches. Cayden Primeau, recently acquired on waivers, secured a win in his only game, leading the team to a 7-4 victory over Nashville.
Though Woll has returned, it’s uncertain when he will be prepared to play again due to his time away. According to league protocols for long-term injured reserve, he could potentially return to play on November 1, giving Toronto some short-term flexibility.
The Maple Leafs continue to cope with several injuries. In their match against Buffalo, the absence of key defensemen Chris Tanev and Morgan Rielly was felt, and leading scorer William Nylander exited the game late. Coach Craig Berube didn’t comment on Nylander’s status for the upcoming clash with the Sabres.
Berube praised Woll’s return as “awesome” and noted the heavy workload Stolarz faced in Woll’s absence. “We leaned on him quite heavily during this stretch,” Berube said. “He’s played a lot of hockey, so I imagine he’s feeling the fatigue.”
Woll's comeback is expected to revitalize the team's spirit. With several key players sidelined, his return may prove pivotal for Toronto as they seek to turn around their current 3-4-1 record and regain their momentum this season.
