President Donald Trump has confirmed that a significant explosion occurred at a dock facility in Venezuela, commonly utilized for drug-loading activities. He stated, "There was a major explosion in the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs. We hit all the boats, and now we hit the area... it's the implementation area. That's where they implement, and that is no longer around."
However, Trump did not provide clarity on the specific target of the operation nor the identity of the US agency responsible. On queries regarding CIA involvement, Trump's response was, "I don't want to say that. I know exactly who it was but I don't want to say who it was."
CNN reported, citing unnamed sources, that the CIA executed a drone strike earlier in the month against a port along Venezuela's coastline. This target was allegedly operated by the Tren de Aragua gang for drug storage and loading. This event aligns with the US's strategy to disrupt drug trafficking paths associated with Venezuela.
Previously, Trump has indicated that he permitted the CIA to engage in covert operations within Venezuela. Recently, in a radio interview, he alluded to an unspecified operation directed at a "big facility" in Venezuela, but did not disclose any specifics. Both the CIA and the Pentagon have refrained from commenting on these remarks when approached by Reuters.
The Venezuelan government has not issued any statements regarding Trump's claims, and no independent confirmations of the strike have surfaced in Venezuela. There are also unverified reports linking the explosion to a fire at Primazol, a chemical plant in Zulia state that caught fire on Christmas Eve. However, Primazol clarified that their incident is unrelated to the explosion described by Trump, emphasizing that their fire was contained and is under investigation. Local witnesses have reported hearing a loud blast, sighting a fire, and detecting chlorine fumes.
The Venezuelan communications ministry, which oversees government press dealings, has not responded to a Reuters request for clarification on the strike.
The Trump administration has actively highlighted its ongoing efforts against suspected drug trafficking vessels, with the Pentagon releasing footage of several operations on social media. The lack of clarity from US national security officials regarding this recent event hints at a possible covert action, likely limiting their ability to comment publicly.
Intensifying pressure against Nicolás Maduro's government, the US is preparing for a new phase of operations related to Venezuela, primarily focusing on military actions against drug trafficking ships. This campaign has led to over 20 incidents in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, with reported fatalities exceeding 100.
Earlier this month, US military leaders informed lawmakers about a strike in September that resulted in 11 casualties, noting that survivors from the initial strike were targeted in a subsequent attack ordered by Admiral Frank Bradley. Congressional Democrats are challenging the legalities of this follow-up strike under international law.
Furthermore, the Trump administration has overseen a considerable military presence in the Caribbean, deploying over 15,000 troops to bolster efforts against drug trafficking and to counter Maduro’s regime.
