Former US President Donald Trump has retracted the invitation offered to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to participate in the proposed “Board of Peace,” intensifying the already rising tensions between the two figures.
This decision was made late Thursday night (local time), merely days after Carney's government expressed its unwillingness to financially contribute to the new initiative, which Trump has characterized as a prestigious international platform aimed at resolving global disputes.
In a direct message via his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated bluntly that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its offer to Canada to join “the most esteemed Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time.”
This altercation marks another episode in the escalating verbal skirmish between Washington and Ottawa, which commenced earlier this week during the World Economic Forum in Davos. Carney garnered significant attention with a speech that referred to a “rupture” in the US-led global order, suggesting that middle powers like Canada, which thrived during an era dominated by US influence, must recognize the shift in global dynamics, noting that “compliance” would no longer ensure safety from pressures or hostilities from major nations.
Trump was quick to respond the following day, deriding Carney in his remarks. He stated, “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”
Carney hit back on Thursday, vehemently rejecting Trump’s assertion: “Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”
This exchange highlights the expanding political and rhetorical divide between the two leaders, even as Canada and the US maintain a close trading relationship and long-standing alliance.
What is the ‘Board of Peace’?
The “Board of Peace” was originally envisioned as an entity to oversee the restoration of Gaza but appears to have broader goals. According to documentation shared with invited nations, its mission is to foster stability, reestablish lawful governance, and ensure lasting peace in conflict-affected areas.
The charter indicates that the board's activities will align with international law and its mandate is not limited to Palestine.
Despite the grand ambitions presented, the proposal has encountered skepticism from multiple nations, and Canada’s refusal to pay for membership seems to have triggered Trump’s decision to withdraw the invitation.
