Trump's Greenland Meme Sparks Controversy Online

Trump's Greenland Meme Sparks Controversy Online

Post by : Bianca Haleem

US President Donald Trump is once again in the spotlight regarding Greenland, this time due to a viral internet meme. The President, known for his desire to acquire Greenland, participated in an online trend by posting an AI-generated image featuring a penguin.

The image, released by the White House, depicts Trump strolling alongside a penguin towards snow-capped mountains. The penguin appears to be holding the US flag, with the Greenland flag on the mountains, accompanied by the caption “Embrace The Penguin.” This post draws inspiration from the popular “Nihilist Penguin” meme featured in Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary, Encounters at the End of the World.

However, the post quickly drew a wave of mockery and criticism. Social media users pointed out the factual error, emphasizing that penguins do not inhabit the Arctic or Greenland. Journalist Pippa Crerar also noted this mistake, clarifying that penguins are exclusively found in the Southern Hemisphere. Many users declared the post embarrassing and shared altered versions featuring a polar bear instead of a penguin.

Recently, Trump has shared several AI images regarding Greenland. One depicted him alongside Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio next to a sign asserting US ownership of Greenland. Another image presented an enlarged map of the United States incorporating Greenland, Canada, and Venezuela.

Trump has been vocal about his interest in acquiring Greenland since his presidency began, recently amping up his rhetoric. He has even threatened tariffs against some European nations while discussing his intentions to gain full access to Greenland for military uses.

This meme incident has gone viral, illustrating how Trump's Greenland aspirations are intertwining with internet culture and global online reactions.
