Typhoon Bavi has unleashed significant flooding in northern China's Hebei province and northeastern Liaoning province, resulting in heavy rainfall and formidable winds across the region.
Streets have been engulfed by floodwaters, impacting transportation networks and leading to vehicles being swept away. Videos shared online depict residents navigating the submerged streets via swimming, paddleboarding, and even wake surfing.
Reports indicate that in Kuancheng County of Hebei, some roadways are submerged under more than two metres of water, as recounted by locals featured in state-run broadcasts.
Kuancheng, located near the Luan River, hosts approximately 240,000 residents. Numerous vehicles were seen adrift on streets before being overwhelmed by powerful currents.
Authorities have disclosed that around 1,800 villagers remain stranded in Kuancheng due to compromised infrastructure and disrupted transportation services. Rescue operations are underway to assist affected residents.
The ensuing flooding follows Typhoon Bavi, described as the most potent storm to impact mainland China this year, delivering torrential rainfall and gales to populated coastal areas.
Meteorological agencies have forewarned of continued heavy precipitation throughout Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Anhui provinces, elevating flood risks in regions already grappling with previous rainfall.
In response, Hebei officials issued alerts via WeChat, emphasizing that during red alerts for severe rainfall, business operations, work duties, and social gatherings must cease.
In Shenyang, flooding has severely impacted daily life, with social media footage showcasing streets inundated, submerging parked cars almost entirely.
Footage captured an individual swimming through a flooded thoroughfare and another person travelling on a paddleboard amidst the high waters.
Additional footage displayed a man wake surfing behind a car caught in the floods, while local authorities assisted in moving submerged vehicles.
Rail operations in Shenyang have also been hindered. China Railway confirmed that more than 30 railway lines were affected, resulting in suspended train services.
Educational institutions in multiple areas, including sectors of Jilin, have been closed as authorities brace for additional severe weather.
The China Meteorological Administration has cautioned that some parts of northeastern China might experience thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds. Anticipated winds over Force 8 could afflict central and northern Jiangsu, with the possibility of tornadoes.
Originating in the Pacific, Typhoon Bavi has swelled to an impressive size, comparable to France. The storm has maintained much of its potency since making landfall on Saturday evening in eastern China.
Chinese meteorologists noted that the storm conserved moisture due to its robust warm core. As it advances toward the Korean Peninsula, further rainfall is forecasted as the system begins to weaken and release its moisture.
Citing reports from China’s Ministry of Water Resources, 46 rivers nationwide are currently experiencing flooding that exceeds alert levels.
