The United Arab Emirates and the African Union Commission have taken a new step to strengthen their relationship by holding the first round of political consultations in Abu Dhabi. This important meeting was built on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2019, which laid the foundation for future cooperation. It was also held in the context of a recent MoU signed in July 2025, which focused on improving health partnerships in Africa. Both sides agreed that these consultations mark the beginning of a more structured and long-term partnership.
Shared Commitment To Partnership
During the talks, both the UAE and the African Union underlined their strong commitment to building a deeper and more strategic partnership. They agreed to work on practical results that will benefit both regions. This will be achieved by increasing technical coordination on key issues and by holding regular consultations. These steps will help track progress and ensure that promises are translated into real action.
Solidarity With Qatar Against Attacks
The consultations also focused on recent regional events. Both the UAE and the African Union expressed full solidarity with the State of Qatar after the recent attacks launched by Israel. They described these attacks as blatant and cowardly, warning that such actions directly threaten peace and stability in the region and the wider world. By standing together, the two sides highlighted the importance of unity against aggression and the need to protect international security.
Support For UAE Sovereignty
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission also took the opportunity to reaffirm the Union’s support for the UAE’s sovereignty over its occupied islands: Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa. This statement was seen as an important gesture of solidarity, reflecting the strength of the UAE–Africa relationship and the commitment of the AU to stand with its partners on issues of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Strong UAE–Africa Relations
Another key theme of the consultations was the deep historical, social, and cultural ties that bind the UAE and Africa together. These relations have been built over decades and are strengthened by shared interests and values. High-level exchanges have also played a major role in strengthening ties. For example, the recent visit of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Angola was highlighted as a significant moment. The visit was important because Angola currently chairs the African Union and plays a leading role in peace and mediation efforts across the continent.
UAE As A Major Investor In Africa
Economic cooperation was one of the main topics discussed during the consultations. The UAE has emerged as the leading investor in Africa, with a vision focused on shared development and long-term growth. Both sides discussed how investments in infrastructure, renewable energy, and sustainable industries could help Africa achieve its development goals. The UAE is especially interested in supporting projects that provide electricity, promote digitalisation, and empower women and youth. By focusing on these areas, the UAE hopes to create jobs, improve living standards, and strengthen Africa’s economic future.
Focus On Regional Stability
The consultations also addressed regional and international issues of common concern. The two sides discussed developments in the Horn of Africa, Sudan, Central Africa, and the Sahel region. These areas have been facing ongoing challenges related to conflict, instability, and humanitarian crises. The UAE and the African Union agreed that joint efforts are needed to enhance security and stability in these regions. Their cooperation will include diplomatic initiatives, development projects, and support for peace processes.
UAE’s Role In The UN Security Council
Another important point of discussion was the role of the UAE during its membership in the United Nations Security Council from 2022 to 2023. During this time, the UAE worked closely with African member states to support African issues at the international level. The African Union praised the UAE for its commitment to African priorities and its cooperation with the three African countries that were members of the Security Council. This history of collaboration shows that the UAE has consistently supported Africa’s voice on global platforms.
Commitment To Peace And Development
As the consultations came to an end, both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to building a strong partnership that promotes peace, stability, and sustainable development across Africa. The UAE and the African Union made it clear that their cooperation goes beyond words, focusing instead on actions that will deliver real benefits for both regions. They agreed that continued dialogue and regular consultations will help keep the partnership active and effective.
Meeting Between Leaders
Following the main consultations, Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, held a separate meeting with Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission. In this meeting, they explored new opportunities for cooperation in areas such as investment, renewable energy, and the empowerment of women and youth. They also discussed how both sides could play a stronger role in driving development and ensuring that progress reaches all parts of society.
Health Partnerships In Focus
One of the main achievements mentioned during the discussions was the Memorandum of Understanding signed in July 2025 on health partnerships in Africa. This agreement aims to strengthen healthcare systems, improve access to medical services, and support African countries in preparing for health emergencies. The UAE has long been active in supporting health projects across Africa, and the new MoU provides a framework for expanding these efforts in partnership with the African Union.
The first round of political consultations between the UAE and the African Union marks only the beginning of a broader journey. Both sides made it clear that this is a long-term partnership built on trust, shared values, and mutual benefits. By working together on political, economic, and social levels, the UAE and Africa can strengthen their relationship in ways that bring prosperity to millions of people.
