The UAE national athletics team delivered a strong performance at the 3rd West Asia U20 Athletics Championship in Beirut, increasing their medal count to seven. On Friday evening, the team added two gold medals and one silver to their tally, demonstrating the strength and potential of the young athletes representing the nation. The championship features around 250 participants from 10 countries and will conclude tomorrow, providing a competitive platform for emerging talents in the region.
Mariam Karim Secures Second Gold in 100m Hurdles
Sprinter Mariam Karim continued her outstanding performance by winning her second gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles. Karim clocked 14.04 seconds, narrowly defeating Syria’s Rayan Hassan, who finished at 14.06 seconds, and Jordan’s Nancy Abosarhan at 17.33 seconds. This victory came after her earlier triumph in the 400m hurdles, establishing her as a dominant force in the championship.
Mixed 4x400m Relay Team Breaks Records
The UAE team also clinched gold in the mixed 4x400m relay final. Athletes Mariam Karim, Omnyat Qamardeen, Saeed Shuaib, and Abdulquddous Ahmed Ali set new championship and national records with a finishing time of 3:26.62 minutes. This achievement highlights the team’s teamwork, skill, and strategic execution in relay events, showcasing UAE’s growing competitiveness on the international athletics stage.
Al Yaziya Tariq Shines in Field Events
In the field events, Al Yaziya Tariq earned a silver medal in the javelin throw (600g) with a distance of 32.09 metres, setting new national records in both the U20 and women’s categories. Tariq had previously won gold in the pole vault earlier in the tournament, further proving the versatility and talent of the UAE athletes across multiple disciplines.
Men’s 400m Finalists Advance
Athletes Sulaiman Abdulrahman and Abdulquddous Ahmed successfully advanced to the men’s 400m final after topping their respective preliminary heats. Their performance highlights the depth of talent within the UAE team and promises further medal opportunities before the championship concludes.

Khawla Sajwani, Board Member of the UAE Athletics Federation, lauded the athletes’ achievements, emphasizing the team’s rise to second place on the overall medal table with seven medals.
