The United Arab Emirates is fortifying its position as a frontrunner in the field of Artificial Intelligence, actively cultivating national talent to usher in a new era of AI expertise. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to enhance digital transformation and establish the nation as a technological powerhouse.
Recognizing that people are central to technological advancements, various stakeholders—universities, research institutions, government entities, and private firms—are collaborating to create a comprehensive framework that encourages education and practical training. This framework encompasses formal education, hands-on training, research prospects, and real-world experience across critical industries. The UAE's goal is to pave the way for a future anchored in knowledge, innovation, and high-level digital competencies.
A prime illustration of this commitment is the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the first global graduate institution entirely focused on AI. It intends to spearhead high-level research and groom future AI leaders capable of crafting transformative solutions and enhancing global technological advancements. Students at MBZUAI benefit from superior education, engage in sophisticated research endeavors, and collaborate across various scientific disciplines to enhance their skills.
The UAE's overarching AI vision is encapsulated in the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence, a blueprint designed to accelerate progress in diverse sectors and integrate AI into governmental services and data processing by 2031. This initiative also envisions the development of modern work environments, improved government efficiency, and fresh economic growth opportunities.
International assessments continue to affirm the UAE's AI leadership. The Government AI Readiness Index 2024 by Oxford Insights positions the UAE at the forefront of the region, ranking 13th globally for readiness in AI technology adoption and expansion. This impressive ranking reflects the nation's robust investments in technology and strategic foresight.
A report by McKinsey & Company, titled The State of Gen AI in the Middle East’s GCC Countries: A 2024 Report Card, underscored the UAE's substantial advancements in training individuals to leverage AI. It highlighted various programs aimed at generative AI, facilitating skill acquisition for workers to adapt to emerging technologies.
Furthermore, Microsoft has recognized the UAE as the global leader in AI adoption, with 59.4% of its citizens currently utilizing AI tools in their daily routines. This statistic illustrates the integration of technology in work, education, and everyday life within the UAE.
Experts assert that the UAE is pivotal in disseminating AI knowledge and nurturing a qualified local talent pool. Randa Bessiso, Director of the Middle East Centre at the University of Manchester – Dubai, emphasized the UAE’s understanding that AI transcends mere technology; it serves as a crucial driver of economic and social progress. She noted that the true value of AI lies in nurturing skilled individuals who can harness its potential effectively.
Bessiso also mentioned the UAE’s proactive response to the global demand for AI professionals by implementing a national strategy that emphasizes education and training, ensuring that learners at all stages are equipped to seize new opportunities in AI.
Amal Dimashki, Regional Director MENAT at Turnitin, added that AI is integral to the UAE’s objectives for economic diversification and sustainable growth. One of the country's foremost priorities is to empower students and professionals with essential AI skills, demonstrated through the Ministry of Education’s innovative curriculum on responsible AI and related training initiatives for educators.
Through these ambitious programs, the UAE is poised to strengthen its technological leadership while cultivating a workforce ready for a future driven by innovation, skills, and advanced digital insights.
