MBRGI Supports Sudanese Refugees in Chad with Vital Projects

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI) recently concluded several essential humanitarian projects in Chad, aimed at supporting Sudanese refugees. These projects were implemented in collaboration with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and focused on providing basic services and infrastructure to improve the living conditions of refugees and local communities.

Access to Clean Water for Refugees

One of the main projects included drilling ten wells across refugee camps in eastern Chad. These wells have an average daily capacity of 975 cubic meters of potable water, benefiting around 65,000 people, including Sudanese refugees and host community members. Clean water access is crucial for health, hygiene, and daily living, especially in refugee settlements.

Healthcare Services Strengthened

MBRGI also established a fully equipped health clinic in the Arkom refugee settlement. The clinic has 13 rooms, two shaded waiting areas, and facilities powered by solar energy. It includes a waste management incinerator and modern medical equipment. The clinic is capable of serving more than 66,000 people, including 40,000 Sudanese refugees and 26,000 members of the host community, providing essential medical care to those in need.

Supporting Vulnerable Communities

Saeed Al Eter, Assistant Secretary-General of MBRGI, emphasized that completing these projects reflects the foundation’s commitment to supporting the most vulnerable populations. He highlighted the importance of funding humanitarian efforts that ease the burden on host communities, improve infrastructure, and ensure access to basic services for refugees.

UNHCR Praises MBRGI’s Efforts

Dr. Khaled Khalifa, UNHCR Senior Advisor and Representative in GCC countries, described these projects as vital steps to help Sudanese refugees rebuild their lives and strengthen resilience. He noted that MBRGI’s contributions allow UNHCR to respond swiftly to urgent needs, particularly as humanitarian agencies face funding gaps.

Ongoing Partnership Since 2021

Since 2021, MBRGI has expanded its partnership with UNHCR, providing over AED136 million (US$37 million) to assist more than 750,000 refugees, displaced persons, and host community members across Asia and Africa. In 2025, the foundation pledged an additional AED36.7 million (US$10 million) to support sustainable programs for displaced communities.

MBRGI’s Broader Humanitarian Mission

Founded in 2015 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, MBRGI is the region’s largest foundation dedicated to humanitarian, relief, philanthropic, and community work. In 2024 alone, it spent over AED2.2 billion, reaching nearly 149 million people across 118 countries. The foundation focuses on humanitarian aid, healthcare, education, innovation, and community empowerment.

Empowering Communities and Human Capital

MBRGI seeks to empower talent and develop skills, preparing educated individuals to lead development in their countries. Its work promotes tolerance, coexistence, and sustainable solutions, ensuring that vulnerable populations receive support that fosters hope, resilience, and a better quality of life.

Impact on Sudanese Refugees and Host Communities

Through these projects, over 131,000 Sudanese refugees and host community members in eastern Chad have benefited from clean water, medical care, and improved infrastructure. These efforts not only address immediate needs but also strengthen community resilience and support long-term development.

MBRGI’s projects in Chad demonstrate the UAE’s commitment to global humanitarian efforts. By partnering with UNHCR and providing substantial resources, the foundation continues to play a vital role in improving the lives of refugees and supporting host communities across vulnerable regions.
