Under the patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, officially inaugurated the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi. This marks the first time the event is being held in the GCC region, under the theme “Powering Transformative Conservation.”
The event brings together global leaders, scientists, and environmental experts to discuss urgent issues facing the planet, including biodiversity loss, climate change, and sustainable resource management.
Sheikh Khaled Highlights UAE’s Environmental Vision
During his opening remarks, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed emphasized that environmental protection remains a cornerstone of the UAE’s development vision. He noted that the UAE has emerged as a global model for sustainability through its continuous efforts to restore ecosystems, safeguard endangered species, and expand protected natural reserves.
Currently, more than 15 percent of the UAE’s land area is designated as protected zones, demonstrating the country’s long-term commitment to preserving biodiversity and promoting balance between development and nature.
Sheikh Khaled reaffirmed that sustainability is not just a policy goal but a guiding principle for the nation’s future. “Environmental balance and the protection of natural resources form the foundation for sustainable development and the wellbeing of future generations,” he said.
High-Level Attendance Reflects Global Importance
The opening ceremony was attended by senior UAE officials including Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence; Dr Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment; Sheikh Shakhboot Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State; and Dr Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi.
Other attendees included Sara Awad Musallam, Chairperson of the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge; Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, President of the IUCN and Managing Director of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund; and Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi.
Global leaders such as Surangel Whipps Jr, President of Palau; Princess Lalla Hasnaa, Chair of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection; and Dr Sylvia Earle, IUCN Patron of Nature, also took part in the event. Their presence highlighted the UAE’s growing role in fostering international dialogue on sustainability.
Strengthening Global Environmental Cooperation
The hosting of the IUCN Congress underlines the UAE’s leadership in promoting environmental cooperation and innovative conservation practices. The event aligns closely with the country’s National Biodiversity Strategy 2031, which seeks to enhance ecosystem restoration, expand nature-based solutions, and protect key species such as the Arabian Oryx and Scimitar-Horned Oryx.
Through its policies and partnerships, the UAE continues to champion global biodiversity preservation and contribute to international efforts to protect natural habitats. The Congress serves as a platform for advancing shared goals in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
UAE’s Global Role in Sustainability
Beyond national borders, the UAE has become a strong advocate for global sustainability. It plays a leading role in renewable energy, food and water security, and nature-based climate solutions. The country’s initiatives, such as the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund and partnerships with international organisations, demonstrate its commitment to practical and collaborative action.
By hosting global events like the IUCN World Conservation Congress and the COP28 Climate Conference, the UAE continues to strengthen its position as a hub for environmental innovation and policy leadership.
