On May 31, Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, had a phone conversation with His Excellency Abdullah bin Sultan Al Nuaimi, Minister of Justice of the United Arab Emirates. The call took place after an Irish citizen, accused of murder and being involved in a criminal organization, was extradited from the UAE. This followed a decision by the Dubai Court of Cassation.

Both ministers said that the extradition shows the strong and ongoing commitment of the UAE and Ireland to uphold the rule of law and work together on international justice matters. It also reflects the close relationship between the two countries and their joint efforts to ensure that justice is carried out.

In a joint statement, the ministers said:
“This positive step shows the strong cooperation between the UAE and Ireland in criminal justice. It proves our shared commitment to bringing to justice those who try to escape it.”

The ministers also praised the work of the Dubai Police and An Garda Síochána (the Irish police) for their strong collaboration. They recognized the important role both police forces play in fighting international organized crime. The two sides agreed on the need to keep working closely through joint efforts to support security, justice, and the rule of law across borders.

After completing all legal procedures in both countries, the UAE and Ireland’s agreements on extradition and mutual legal help in criminal matters officially came into force on May 18, 2025.
