The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched a groundbreaking initiative titled "AI for Development," dedicating $1 billion to promote and fund artificial intelligence projects throughout African nations. The announcement took place during the G20 summit by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
This ambitious initiative seeks to stimulate both economic and social advancement in Africa by enhancing digital infrastructures, refining government services, and boosting productivity. It concentrates on empowering developing nations to utilize artificial intelligence across pivotal sectors such as education, agriculture, and infrastructure, thereby creating innovative solutions to accelerate growth and promote sustainable development.
Led by the Abu Dhabi Exports Office (ADEX), part of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, the project collaborates closely with the UAE Foreign Aid Agency to align with long-term developmental goals. This partnership underscores the UAE’s dedication to enabling developing countries to leverage advanced technologies and harness the transformative potential of AI for positive impacts.
Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, asserted that the initiative exemplifies the UAE’s conviction that artificial intelligence is crucial for equitable growth and sustainable progress. By fusing technology, investment, and collaborations, the UAE aspires to assist African nations in overcoming challenges while strengthening their economies.
He highlighted that the inclusion of AI in education, agriculture, and infrastructure opens up new avenues for inclusive development. This initiative also offers UAE businesses opportunities to engage in essential projects that reinforce economic and technological relationships between the UAE and African countries, further supporting global efforts to accomplish sustainable development objectives.
The initiative pays tribute to the humanitarian legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s founding father, reflecting ongoing commitment from the nation’s leadership including President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Foreign Aid Agency, reiterated the UAE’s pivotal role in uplifting communities globally. He remarked that the UAE persists in executing significant projects employing AI to drive development, particularly in Africa. Dr. Al Ameri noted that this initiative is part of the UAE's continual efforts to enhance living standards and foster a brighter future for populations facing developmental hurdles.
Numerous African nations require initiatives like this to enhance their education, healthcare, and infrastructure. The UAE is rapidly establishing itself as a world leader in artificial intelligence and technology, achieving remarkable standings in global rankings for digital progress.
Since its establishment in 1971, the UAE has contributed over AED 152 billion in aid to African nations. The new AI for Development initiative builds on this legacy, aiming to generate more AI-driven projects across the continent. It reinforces the UAE’s role as a hub for cutting-edge technologies and smart systems, propelling development, modernization, and inclusive growth worldwide.
This historic initiative highlights the UAE’s dedication to global leadership in technology and development, offering intelligent solutions that advance sustainable progress in Africa and beyond.
