UAE Leads in Women’s Political Empowerment with 50% in FNC

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The United Arab Emirates has become a global example in political empowerment of women. This achievement comes from the leadership’s belief that women have the ability, skills, and determination to create positive changes in all areas of life. Women in the UAE today contribute strongly to national progress and sustainable development, shaping the nation’s present and future.

Landmark Decision in 2019

In 2019, the UAE took a historic step by increasing women’s representation in the Federal National Council (FNC) to 50 percent. This decision showed the leadership’s clear vision to support gender equality and ensure women play a strong role in political life. With this move, the UAE became the first country in the Arab world and the entire region to achieve equal parliamentary representation between men and women. Globally, the UAE ranked fourth in women’s participation in parliament according to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Early Steps in Political Participation

The journey of Emirati women in political life began in 2006, when they first took part as both voters and candidates in the FNC elections. That was the first time women had such a political role in the UAE. In the 14th legislative term in 2007, nine women won seats, representing 22.5 percent of the Council. In the 15th term of 2011, seven women held seats (17.5 percent). In 2015, during the 16th term, women made up 22 percent. By the 17th term in 2019, the number grew to 50 percent, and this representation continues in the current 18th term in 2023.

Historic Milestone in 2015

A major milestone was reached in 2015 when Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi was elected as the Speaker of the Federal National Council. This made her the first woman in the Arab world to head a parliamentary institution. Her achievement was celebrated not only in the UAE but across the region, showing that Emirati women were ready to lead at the highest levels.

Women as Key Partners in National Progress

Members of the FNC have often stressed that the political empowerment of women in the UAE shows the true meaning of partnership and equality. It reflects the idea that both men and women are needed for the country’s growth. Women are now active contributors to national decisions, policies, and achievements in every sector—politics, business, education, and society. Their presence in parliament shows that women are no longer on the sidelines but are central to shaping the country’s future.

Leadership’s Vision and Legacy

Amna Ali Salem Ali Al Odaidi explained that Emirati women’s success in politics is the result of the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE. He believed that women were vital for building the nation. His vision has been continued by the current leadership and supported strongly by H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, known as the “Mother of the Nation.” She has played a key role in women’s empowerment as Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union and other important national institutions.

Emirati Women’s Day and Political Success

Maryam Majid bin Theneya highlighted that Emirati Women’s Day, celebrated every year, is an important occasion to recognize women’s achievements. This celebration includes their success in politics, legislation, and leadership roles. She stressed that empowering women in politics was never a temporary decision but part of a larger vision. It shows that the UAE leadership believes real development cannot happen unless both men and women take part equally.

Women as Builders of the Nation

According to Mona Khalifa Hamad, Emirati women have always been active partners in building the UAE. Their efforts are not limited to one sector but spread across all areas of development. Women have helped the nation grow, guided its future vision, and supported its goals for sustainability and global leadership. By participating in parliament, women ensure that policies are more balanced and that the voices of families and communities are included in national decisions.

A Long-Standing Path of Empowerment

Aisha Rashid Laitim explained that the UAE’s success in women’s political empowerment was not sudden or accidental. It has been part of a long path taken since the early days of the Union. From the beginning, the UAE followed a clear approach that saw women as essential partners in nation-building. This belief has grown stronger with every decade, resulting in the remarkable achievements seen today.

Equal Opportunities in All Fields

Sumaiya Abdullah Salim bin Hareb Al Suwaidi pointed out that Emirati women’s achievements in leadership and politics come from a broad national vision of equal opportunities. Women in the UAE have been supported in education, work, professional careers, and political roles. This comprehensive support has allowed them to compete equally with men and to prove their abilities in every field.

Women Shaping National Policies

Aisha Ibrahim Al Marri emphasized that Emirati women are not just participating but actively shaping public policies at the national level. They are influencing important decisions that impact the entire country. This has been possible because of the strong support of the leadership, which has trusted women to play these roles. Mona Rashid Tahnoon also explained that none of these successes could have happened without the leadership’s faith in women’s abilities.

UAE as a Role Model for the Region

The UAE today stands as a role model for the Arab world and beyond. Its achievements in empowering women politically show what can be accomplished when leadership provides equal opportunities. The equal representation of women and men in parliament reflects fairness, vision, and a modern approach to governance. It proves that development is stronger and more sustainable when both genders share the responsibility.

The UAE’s journey in political empowerment of women is not over. It is a continuing process that will inspire future generations of Emirati women to take part in politics and decision-making. The foundation has been laid by strong leaders and by women who stepped forward with courage and determination. With ongoing support, Emirati women are expected to continue shaping the country’s path towards development, progress, and global leadership.
