The United Arab Emirates joined the world in celebrating World Teachers’ Day on 5th October, honouring teachers for their dedication to education, innovation, and nation building. The day is observed globally every year to highlight the essential contributions of teachers to society. In the UAE, teachers are held in high esteem for nurturing future generations with knowledge, values, and creativity.
UAE’s Ongoing Commitment to Education and Teachers
Education holds a central place in the UAE’s national vision. The country celebrates Emirati Day for Education every year on 28th February, acknowledging the importance of education in shaping the nation’s progress. This occasion also pays tribute to educators, administrators, and all who contribute to the UAE’s evolving education system. Through these efforts, the UAE reinforces its commitment to academic excellence and lifelong learning.
Mohamed bin Zayed Award for Best Teacher
Among the UAE’s prominent education initiatives is the Mohamed bin Zayed Award for Best Teacher, a key legacy of the nation’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Since its establishment in 2017, the award has recognised teachers who demonstrate exceptional performance, innovation, and leadership in education. It also serves as a platform to share best practices that inspire teaching excellence across schools in the UAE and beyond.
Empowering Educators through Advanced Training
In August 2025, the Mohamed bin Zayed Award introduced the Executive Educational Excellence Pioneers Programme in partnership with the Emirates College for Advanced Education. This initiative aims to empower award-winning teachers by enhancing their leadership and teaching abilities. The programme focuses on modern educational practices, particularly integrating technology and artificial intelligence into classrooms, to prepare educators for the future of learning.
Khalifa Award for Education Promotes Innovation
Another important initiative is the Khalifa Award for Education, launched in 2007 to support educational institutions and encourage creativity within the teaching community. The award recognises outstanding efforts in ten educational fields across 17 categories at the local, Arab, and international levels. The 19th edition (2025–2026) was announced in July 2025, with applications open until 31st December 2025. Over the years, this award has become a symbol of quality, innovation, and educational excellence in the region.
Hamdan–UNESCO Prize for Teacher Development
At the international level, the Hamdan–UNESCO Prize for Teacher Development highlights the UAE’s global commitment to education. The Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation collaborates with UNESCO to honour institutions and educators who develop innovative teaching solutions. The prize, awarded every two years, encourages global collaboration and the sharing of successful education models. The winners of the 2025–2026 cycle will be honoured at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on World Teachers’ Day 2026.
Supporting Teachers through National Initiatives
The UAE Government has also launched several initiatives to empower teachers. During the Annual Government Meetings in 2019, programmes were introduced to enhance teachers’ professional skills and motivate them to lead change in classrooms. These programmes aimed to ensure that educators are equipped to prepare students for a rapidly changing global landscape.
Educational Councils Strengthen Teachers’ Voice
In October 2022, the Emirates Schools Establishment launched the Educational Councils initiative for school leaders and teachers in government schools. This initiative allows teachers to take part in decision-making and contribute their field experience to educational reform. It encourages collaboration between educators and policymakers, ensuring that development strategies align with real classroom needs.
A Vision of Lifelong Learning and Respect
Through these efforts, the UAE continues to build a strong educational foundation based on innovation, respect, and inclusivity. By celebrating teachers and supporting their professional growth, the nation reaffirms its vision of a future where education leads progress and teachers remain at the heart of development.
