The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has urged Iran and the United States to reach a nuclear agreement and find a long-term solution to rising tensions in the Middle East. The call comes ahead of renewed talks between the two countries, with regional states expected to participate.
Iran and the U.S. will resume nuclear negotiations on Friday in Turkey. U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that “bad things” could happen if no deal is reached, while sending warships toward Iran.
Anwar Gargash, adviser to the UAE president, emphasized the importance of diplomacy. “The region has faced many confrontations. We don’t need another. Direct negotiations can prevent recurring issues,” he said during the World Governments Summit in Dubai.
U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi will lead the talks in Istanbul, with representatives from countries like Saudi Arabia and Egypt also attending.
Tensions have escalated following a violent crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran last month, the bloodiest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. U.S. naval deployment comes after these events, while Trump demands Iran make nuclear concessions.
Iran’s leaders worry that a U.S. strike could threaten their rule by reigniting public anger. Officials said the regime sees Iran’s ballistic missile program, rather than uranium enrichment, as the main obstacle to resuming talks.
Iran’s regional influence has also been affected by Israeli attacks on its proxies, including Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and militias in Iraq. Following U.S. strikes on nuclear sites last year, Tehran claims uranium enrichment has stopped, though satellite images show repair work at key facilities in Isfahan and Natanz.
