UAE Can Lead Global Future Of Clean Energy With AI

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Irshad Mansoor, the President and CEO of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), has praised the United Arab Emirates for its ability to lead a new global era where clean energy and artificial intelligence (AI) work together. Speaking at the World Green Economy Summit, he explained that the UAE has all the right elements—natural resources, renewable and nuclear projects, and major investments in AI and data centers. This powerful mix makes the country a strong global model that can balance economic growth with protecting the planet.

A Unique Combination of Strengths

According to Mansoor, the UAE’s strength comes from combining different but connected projects and industries. The country has major energy projects such as the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant and the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which includes energy storage systems. Alongside these, the UAE is home to technology leaders like G42 and other major companies in AI and digital innovation. Together, they are building some of the largest data centers and knowledge hubs in the world. By linking clean energy with AI, the UAE is setting up a system where clean power generates knowledge, and knowledge in turn helps to protect the environment.

Redefining Carbon Neutrality

Mansoor stressed that the world must start thinking about “carbon neutrality” in a broader way. He said that focusing only on reducing greenhouse gas emissions is not enough anymore. Instead, carbon neutrality should cover more areas, including the protection of water resources, land, air quality, and biodiversity. Only when all of these elements are addressed together can humanity truly protect the planet for the long term.

Learning From New Realities

Mansoor also highlighted how the rapid rise of artificial intelligence has created new challenges. He gave the example of ChatGPT, which was launched just two years ago but has already changed the way people think about knowledge and technology. Training large AI models requires huge amounts of electricity—hundreds of gigawatts in some cases. This shows that humanity has entered a new era where creating knowledge itself demands massive amounts of energy. The challenge is to make sure that this energy comes from clean and sustainable sources, rather than polluting ones.

Facing Short-Term Emission Increases

Mansoor admitted that in the short term, emissions are likely to rise because of the construction of new power plants. However, he explained that this increase will only be temporary. He described it as a “turning point,” after which renewable energy sources, carbon capture technologies, and other advanced solutions will grow rapidly. These changes will help the world get closer to long-term sustainability goals, even if emissions climb slightly in the immediate future.

The UAE as a Pioneer in Integration

The UAE’s role in this transformation is especially important. By investing in both renewable power and advanced AI, the country is showing how to integrate two major forces of the future. Clean electricity from solar, nuclear, and other sources can directly support the energy demands of advanced technologies like AI and big data. At the same time, AI itself can be used to make energy systems more efficient, manage resources smarter, and design solutions that reduce environmental impact. This cycle places the UAE in a pioneering position globally.

Beyond Net Zero Emissions

Mansoor’s call to “look beyond net zero” is a reminder that the climate debate must expand. Reducing emissions alone is no longer enough in a world where technology and human activity impact all aspects of the environment. Protecting water, improving air quality, saving biodiversity, and using land wisely must also be part of any strategy. For countries like the UAE, which are investing heavily in both green energy and innovation, this broader definition of sustainability offers a chance to lead by example.

Energy for Knowledge Creation

One of Mansoor’s strongest points was that the future will require enormous amounts of energy to produce knowledge itself. Unlike the past, where energy was mostly used for transport, industry, and homes, the new age of AI means data centers and smart systems will become huge consumers of electricity. This shift could either become a problem for the environment or a solution—depending on whether that electricity comes from clean or dirty sources. The UAE, with its solar and nuclear resources, is showing how to power the future of knowledge in a green and responsible way.

Building a Sustainable Future With Innovation

The world is facing a dual challenge—meeting growing energy demands while at the same time protecting the planet. The UAE’s approach, as highlighted by Mansoor, provides a roadmap for others to follow. By investing in large-scale clean energy projects, encouraging technological innovation, and building global partnerships, the country is proving that it is possible to pursue both prosperity and sustainability at the same time.

UAE as a Global Model

Irshad Mansoor’s statements at the World Green Economy Summit made it clear that the UAE has the potential to lead the world in a new direction. A direction where clean energy and artificial intelligence support each other, where carbon neutrality is seen in broader terms, and where knowledge and technology serve the planet instead of harming it. The UAE’s investments in nuclear power, solar energy, AI companies, and massive data centers are already shaping this future. If the world follows this model, humanity could achieve a balance between economic growth and protecting the environment—a balance that defines true sustainability.
