UAE Assumes Vice Presidency at UNESCO’s 43rd General Conference

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Samarkand, Uzbekistan – The United Arab Emirates has been appointed as Vice President of the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, reflecting its rising influence within international cultural and educational domains. This significant event, set between October 30 and November 13, unites delegates from 194 member states.

At the forefront of the UAE delegation is Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture and Chair of the UAE National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. This election underscores the UAE’s proactive involvement in global cultural diplomacy and collaborative efforts.

During the conference, UNESCO recognized the late Emirati poet Ahmed Bin Sulayem and the United Arab Emirates University as part of its 2026–2027 Anniversaries Programme. This honor celebrates the 50th anniversary of the poet's death and the founding of the UAE's first university in 1976.

Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi reaffirmed the UAE's dedication to UNESCO's goals in education, culture, and science. He also spotlighted the nation's cooperative ventures on heritage restoration, including the acclaimed 'Revive the Spirit of Mosul' project, exemplifying the UAE's commitment to post-conflict recovery and cultural conservation.

Currently leading the Arab Group at UNESCO, the UAE continues to solidify its role as a reliable partner in global cultural and educational dialogues. Its Vice Presidency at the General Conference further underscores the nation's commitment to promoting worldwide dialogue and safeguarding heritage.
