Cultural Exploration at ICOM Dubai 2025: A Global Gathering

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Dubai played host to a diverse group of museum professionals during the 27th General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Dubai 2025). This prestigious event, graced by the support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, marked a significant milestone as it was the first ICOM conference held in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. In addition to the main sessions, delegates were treated to a curated selection of excursions aimed at showcasing the UAE’s rich cultural tapestry.

The Local Social Programme featured a variety of immersive day trips throughout all seven emirates. Each excursion was thoughtfully crafted to represent the unique character of its respective emirate, emphasizing a journey through the country’s heritage, innovation, nature, and contemporary culture. Delegates wandered through traditional souks, ecological sites, modern museums, and archaeological landmarks that illustrate the UAE's transformation from its ancient origins to its modern advancements.

Notable sites included Al Ain Oasis and Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain, Mleiha Archaeological Centre and the Heritage Museum in Sharjah, along with cultural icons in Abu Dhabi such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan. In Ras Al Khaimah, visitors explored Dhayah Fort and the National Museum, while in Dubai, they marveled at the Museum of the Future, Etihad Museum, and Al Shindagha Museum. Additional richness was offered through Ajman Museum and the archaeological locations of Tell-Abraq and Ed-Dour in Umm Al Quwain.

Complementing the local excursions, the Regional Excursions Programme allowed delegates to delve deeper into the cultural narratives of the Middle East. Multi-day trips to Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan acquainted participants with the regional museum landscapes, emphasizing shared heritage, preservation efforts, and continuing narratives that shape cultural identity.

The blend of local and regional experiences not only highlighted the UAE’s cultural offerings but also provided a broader perspective on how museums across the region endeavor to safeguard stories, traditions, and knowledge. These experiences reinforced ICOM’s mission to unite cultures through exchange, learning, and impactful discoveries.
