The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has achieved a significant milestone in construction safety by receiving a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This new method fortifies reinforced concrete structures against progressive collapse.
Developed by Prof. Bilal El-Ariss, alongside Professor Said Elkholy and MSc student Eng. Ahmad Shehada, this pioneering technique emphasizes safety, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. It utilizes short, diagonal steel bars—often remnants from construction sites—to enhance the stability of critical columns during building operations.
By effectively linking beams at right angles onto these columns, the method dramatically increases a building's resilience to disproportionate failure, even in the event of a key column's failure. Notably, this approach eliminates the need for extra materials, specialized tools, or additional labor, making it compatible with established construction methods and architectural designs.
Dr. El-Ariss stated, “This innovation transcends structural engineering; it’s about fostering safer urban environments while advocating for sustainability.” In quickly developing urban settings in the UAE, particularly those in seismic regions, the urgency for strong construction practices is paramount. This method aligns with global sustainable development goals through the repurposing of construction waste and reducing environmental impacts without inflating project expenses.
Looking ahead, the UAEU team aspires to partner with contractors and consultants to broaden the application of this system. Further research will aim at optimizing the method and increasing awareness of its potential to save lives, ensuring safer living spaces while promoting eco-friendly construction standards.
