Abu Dhabi: UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has dismissed allegations that the UAE supplied weapons to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, she cited verified data from international review mechanisms ensuring that arms do not reach conflict parties.
Cooper highlighted comprehensive audit processes that aligned with evidence previously shared by the UAE to refute such claims. Her statement is seen as a significant diplomatic development, with political and legal implications for ongoing international discussions on Sudan.
Observers say Cooper’s remarks weaken campaigns attempting to discredit the UAE’s humanitarian and diplomatic efforts, not only in Sudan but also in other crisis-hit regions such as Yemen.
The UK minister described the allegations as “unfounded” and said British authorities had reviewed more than 2,000 arms export licences. The review confirmed that no weapons were diverted to Sudan, reinforcing the accuracy of the UAE’s position.
Cooper’s statement carries legal and political weight, emphasizing that continued arms flow risks worsening the Sudan conflict and spreading instability in the region. Analysts note that such accusations may be politically motivated, aiming to shift responsibility away from Sudanese factions.
The comments also shed light on the wider geopolitical context of the conflict, with regional rivalries influencing narratives. The UAE has consistently called for dialogue, a ceasefire, and humanitarian relief, aligning with the UK’s assessment.
Dr Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to the UAE President, welcomed Cooper’s remarks, describing them as “notable and important.” He reiterated the UAE’s consistent stance: immediate ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access, and a transition to civilian governance in Sudan.
“The facts expose the misinformation, and the position is clear and consistent,” Gargash said on X, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to peace and humanitarian support.
