NEW YORK, February 20, 2026 — The United Nations has issued a serious warning that Somalia is facing one of the most complex and dangerous hunger crises in recent years. The crisis is being driven by consecutive failed rainy seasons, ongoing conflict, and a severe shortfall in humanitarian funding.
The World Food Programme has cautioned that without urgent financial support from the international community, it may be forced to suspend essential food assistance programmes. Such a move could leave millions of people at risk of extreme hunger and starvation.
Ross Smith, Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response at the WFP, described the situation as critical. He said that food security indicators and early warning systems managed by the WFP and its partners show Somalia is following a path similar to previous devastating hunger emergencies.
According to UN data, around 4.4 million people—nearly one-quarter of Somalia’s population—are currently experiencing acute food insecurity, classified as IPC Phase 3 or higher. Women and children are among the most affected groups.
Smith warned that Somalia is approaching another dangerous turning point. He stressed that without immediate action and fresh funding, humanitarian agencies may not be able to reach the most vulnerable communities in time to prevent a major humanitarian disaster.
