The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is actively confronting an escalating outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD), with health officials noting a worrying increase in confirmed cases and fatalities. Teams are intensifying their efforts in treatment, screening, and prevention throughout the affected regions, while neighboring nations remain vigilant.
The DRC officially declared an outbreak of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) on May 15. Subsequent laboratory tests confirmed that the outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus.
As of July 7, official reports indicate the DRC has witnessed 1,708 confirmed cases of Ebola and 580 associated fatalities from the outbreak.
Uganda has also identified cases tied to this outbreak. Health officials confirmed 20 Ebola cases and two deaths, all associated with infections traceable to the DRC.
Additionally, on July 4, Uganda's Ministry of Health reported a case of Marburg virus disease, a hemorrhagic fever closely related to Ebola.

The outbreak predominantly affects Ituri province, which has reported the majority of confirmed cases.
However, infections have also been detected in Haut-Uele, North Kivu, and South Kivu, indicating a spread beyond the initial hotspot.
While South Sudan hasn't reported any Ebola cases, health authorities warn that the country remains at significant risk due to substantial cross-border movements with the DRC.
The mobility of transient populations is a primary concern for regional preparedness against the outbreak.
Healthcare teams are implementing comprehensive response measures across affected nations, including case management, infection control, screening, triage, community engagement, training, and preparedness strategies.
Support is currently being delivered to 89 healthcare facilities aimed at enhancing Ebola screening and treatment capabilities.
So far, these facilities have executed 121,777 screenings and treated 422 patients, including 132 confirmed cases of Ebola.
A total of 2,208 individuals in the DRC have undergone training focusing on effective Ebola case management and outbreak response strategies.
This training is designed to bolster healthcare workers' proficiency in detecting, managing, and containing infections.
Supported by funding from the U.S. Department of State, DG ECHO, and various donors, the International Medical Corps is acting in close cooperation with health ministries and partners across the region.
Since the outbreak declaration, the organization has utilized a hub-and-spoke methodology to fortify Ebola treatment and transit facilities, including improvements in infection prevention at health centers.
The International Medical Corps collaborates with health ministries and partner organizations to enhance case management, screening services, facility-based surveillance, and improve mental health support and sanitation measures.
Additionally, the organization aids in expanded contact tracing, enhancement of case mapping, and continuous monitoring efforts to minimize undetected Ebola transmission risks across affected and adjacent areas.
