The United States has enacted targeted military action against Islamic State (IS) sites in northwest Nigeria, as confirmed by US officials on Thursday in response to a request from the Nigerian government.
As per declarations from President Donald Trump and US military leaders, the operation primarily targeted IS-affiliated militants in Sokoto State, a region grappling with escalating extremist violence. US Africa Command stated that this strike was performed in close cooperation with local authorities, leading to the deaths of several Islamic State operatives.
The operation aimed at dismantling militant camps while deteriorating the group’s capacity to coordinate and execute attacks. An earlier post on the command’s official X account mentioned that the strike was undertaken at Nigeria's request; however, this post was subsequently removed without clarification.
Strengthening Security Collaboration
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the airstrikes form part of an ongoing security collaboration between Abuja and Washington. In a statement shared on X, they highlighted the partnership involving intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and joint measures aimed at dismantling terrorist networks in the northwest.
“These coordinated efforts have led to precise airstrikes on terrorist targets in the North West,” said the ministry, describing the operation as a crucial step toward restoring security and safeguarding civilians.
US officials noted that the strike followed extensive intelligence-gathering activities. Reports indicated that US surveillance aircraft had been conducting reconnaissance flights over significant parts of Nigeria since late November, concentrating on areas with active extremist groups.
Trump Highlights Rising Threats
This strike comes after President Trump repeatedly alerted that Christian communities in parts of Nigeria are under an “existential threat” from extremist violence. In late October, Trump criticized Nigerian authorities for their inadequate response to assaults on Christians, hinting at possible US military intervention should conditions deteriorate.
Trump announced the latest operation on Christmas Day while at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, without any public engagements that day.
Defense Department Confirms Operation
A video from the Pentagon demonstrated at least one missile being launched from a US naval vessel. A defense official indicated that the strike targeted multiple known IS camps and aimed at several senior and mid-level militants involved in planning attacks in the area.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government for its cooperation. He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of both nations, adding a succinct message on X: “More to come….”
Ongoing Violence in Nigeria
The airstrike took place amid ongoing violence across Nigeria. Earlier on Thursday, law enforcement reported a suicide bomber killed at least five individuals and injured 35 in the northeast, a region frequently impacted by extremist assaults and insurgency.
In a Christmas address on X, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called for peace and unity among diverse communities. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring safety for all citizens, regardless of faith.
“I remain dedicated to everything within my power to guarantee religious freedom in Nigeria and to defend Christians, Muslims, and all Nigerians against violence,” stated Tinubu.
Part of the Broader US Anti-IS Campaign
This strike in Nigeria follows recent US military endeavors elsewhere. Just last week, American forces conducted large-scale strikes against numerous IS targets in Syria as Trump vowed retribution following a suspected ISIS attack on US personnel.
US officials assert that these operations reflect a broader strategy intended to weaken IS networks globally and assist partner nations combating extremist threats. Though Washington has not signaled a wider military role in Nigeria, this latest strike highlights the growing security ties between the two nations as they confront escalating militant activities in West Africa.
