Vietnam’s 2026 high school graduation exam is undergoing a noteworthy change in subject preferences, as more students opt for STEM and tech-related disciplines while moving away from traditional subject combinations. Education authorities attribute this trend to an increased focus on career-oriented learning stemming from the 2018 General Education Program.
Data from the Ministry of Education and Training reveals a significant rise in registrations for subjects related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This surge indicates a shift where students now prioritize personal strengths and future career aspirations, reflecting current labor market needs over conventional academic paths.
One of the remarkable changes noted is the accelerated growth in registrations for technology-focused subjects. Informatics saw a 142 percent increase, while Industrial Technology rose by an impressive 205 percent. There was also substantial growth in Agricultural Technology, indicating a burgeoning interest in areas tied to innovation, digital change, and modern industry.
Officials suggest that this trend underscores the effectiveness of career guidance initiatives within schools. Students are making informed choices about subjects that align with their career ambitions, helping to diversify exam structures and encouraging focused skill development in line with their future goals.
While STEM subjects are gaining momentum, social science courses remain strong influences in the educational framework. History has emerged as the top elective for 2026, engaging over 570,000 students. Courses in Economic and Legal Education also show considerable interest, reflecting an enhanced focus on civic awareness, economics, and legal literacy among young individuals.
Another significant milestone for the 2026 examination cycle is the successful implementation of digital transformation strategies. More than 1.2 million students registered for exams online, encompassing nearly 98.5 percent of all candidates. The widespread adoption of digital systems indicates substantial advancements in the management of education and exam processes nationwide.
Experts in education view these developments as a favorable evolution in Vietnam’s educational framework. The emerging harmony between STEM fields, social sciences, effective career guidance, and digital learning is anticipated to foster a skilled workforce poised to tackle future economic and technological demands, while also advancing national developmental objectives.
