South Africa women’s cricket team comfortably beat Sri Lanka in their rain-affected 20-over World Cup match in Colombo. The revised target was 121 runs, and South Africa chased it without losing any wickets, marking their sixth 10-wicket win in Women’s ODIs and fourth consecutive win in the tournament.
Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits played strong innings, both scoring half-centuries. Their partnership was South Africa’s seventh century stand in ODIs, helping the team to reach the target with ease.
Sri Lanka started well, with Vishmi Gunaratne hitting a couple of boundaries. However, she got injured in the fifth over after being struck on the knee by a fielder’s throw and had to leave the field. Masabata Klaas then took two early wickets, dismissing Chamari Athapaththu and Hasini Perera, leaving Sri Lanka at 46 for 2 after 12 overs.
Rain delayed the match for nearly five hours, reducing both teams’ innings to 20 overs. After the break, Kavisha Dilhari tried to attack by hitting a six off the first ball she faced. Despite her efforts, South Africa’s bowling was strong. Nonkululeko Mlaba took two wickets in the final over, and a run-out from Anushka Sanjeewani helped restrict Sri Lanka to 105 for 7.
South Africa’s openers started cautiously but steadily built their innings. Wolvaardt and Brits rotated the strike well, found gaps, and scored boundaries regularly. By the 13th over, they had effectively ended any chance of a Sri Lanka comeback, hitting boundaries off Dilhari.
Wolvaardt reached 100 for South Africa with a boundary, while Brits finished the match with a boundary and a six off Piumi Badalge. Their strong batting partnership ensured a smooth victory and demonstrated South Africa’s dominance in the tournament so far.
The win highlights South Africa’s solid team performance and consistency in the World Cup. With Wolvaardt and Brits leading the way, the team looks confident and in strong form as they aim to continue their winning streak in the ongoing tournament.
