GCC Insight: Xposure 2026 Conservation Summit Tackles Ocean Crisis

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The upcoming Xposure International Photography Festival 2026 will feature its Conservation Summit on February 2, uniting distinguished photographers, ocean scientists, and explorers to confront pressing dangers faced by marine ecosystems. Under the theme “Troubled Waters”, the summit will emphasize actionable strategies for conserving our oceans.

Oceans are vital for planet health, absorbing about 91% of the extra heat and 29% of CO2 emissions globally. Nonetheless, pollution, climate change, overfishing, and industrial activities increasingly jeopardize marine life. Scientists alert that without immediate intervention, countless marine species risk extinction.

A Catalyst for Global Environmental Engagement

His Excellency Tariq Saeed Allay, Director-General of Sharjah Government Media Bureau, highlighted the Conservation Summit as a cornerstone of the Xposure initiative. He noted that this event showcases the festival’s aim to tackle worldwide challenges by fostering solutions, influencing policies, and promoting collective responsibility. By intertwining visual storytelling with science and art, the summit aims to motivate significant environmental actions.

Highlighted Sessions at the Conservation Summit

Kicking off with the keynote session titled “The Living Sea: A Fight for Our Oceans”, the event features Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi, from the Sharjah Department of Government Relations, alongside renowned photojournalist and National Geographic Explorer Brian Skerry. This opening will delve into the delicate nature of ocean ecosystems and emphasize the role of documentary photography in conservation efforts.

In another key session, “Troubled Waters”, leading figures in marine narration and science will gather. Participants will include Dr. Jennifer Adler, Shane Gross, Greg Lecoeur, and Academy Award-winner Pippa Ehrlich, co-director of My Octopus Teacher. Moderated by Kathy Moran, National Geographic’s first Senior Editor for Natural History, the session will address the consequences of human activity on marine ecosystems and the necessary measures for their protection.

Exhibits on Marine Conservation

Five solo exhibitions in the Ocean and Marine Conservation Zone will accompany the Conservation Summit, showcasing marine biodiversity, coral reef degradation, underwater forests, and vulnerable ocean ecosystems through compelling visuals.

Featured artists include Alp Can, Greg Lecoeur, Shane Gross, Jennifer Adler, and Brian Skerry, each presenting long-term visual projects that capture the oceans’ beauty and the urgent need for their preservation.

Inspiring Talks on the X Stage

On February 2, six inspirational discussions will take place on the X Stage, where speakers will share experiences from underwater exploration, marine conservation, and scientific endeavors, illustrating how photography and film play crucial roles in raising environmental awareness and wildlife conservation.

Topics will range from hidden underwater ecosystems and Mediterranean conservation efforts to storytelling in science, the significance of kelp forests, endangered species, and coral reef sustainability.

Hands-On Workshop for Photography Enthusiasts

On February 3, a four-hour interactive workshop titled “Underwater Photography Tips and Tricks” will be led by Alp Can, geared for novice and intermediate photographers, focusing on diving fundamentals, underwater lighting, composition, and post-production techniques.

Organized by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, the Xposure International Photography Festival 2026 will be hosted at Aljada from January 29 to February 4 under the banner “A Decade of Visual Storytelling.”

Featuring over 126 talks and keynotes, 72 workshops, 280 portfolio reviews, and 95 exhibitions spotlighting more than 3,200 works, the Xposure Photography and Film Awards 2026 attracted 29,000 photo submissions and 634 film entries from 60 countries, underscoring its expanding international reach and commitment to socially and environmentally responsible storytelling.
