In a substantial operation aimed at tackling cybercrime, Sri Lankan authorities have apprehended nearly 200 foreign nationals, with 173 of them being Indian citizens. This action was part of a crackdown focused on cybercrime activities linked to foreign groups operating within the island nation’s southern tourist areas.
The coordinated raids, conducted late on May 11, resulted in the arrest of a total of 198 individuals from various countries, including 173 Indians and 25 Nepalese, in resort locations such as Galle, Hikkaduwa, and Midigama. This latest move is embedded within a broader national initiative aimed at combating international cybercrime networks reportedly utilizing temporary rentals and tourist accommodations.
Authorities suspect that several of those detained may have engaged in online fraud and digital scams targeting victims worldwide. While detailed specifics on the alleged offenses have yet to be disclosed, officials have confirmed the seizure of electronic devices, computers, and telecommunications equipment for forensic inspection.
Sri Lanka's southern coast has increasingly attracted tourists and remote workers in recent years, but this boom has also seen criminal elements attempting to exploit these locations for cyber fraud and unlawful online activities. The police indicated that their actions were informed by intelligence and extensive surveillance leading to this operation.
As investigations move forward, the detained individuals are set to undergo thorough questioning. Sri Lanka intends to collaborate with Indian and Nepalese diplomatic representatives concerning the apprehended nationals. Investigators are also scrutinizing immigration documents, visa statuses, and financial activities related to the individuals involved in this wider investigation into potential international cybercrime networks.
This crackdown underscores increasing anxiety among South Asian governments regarding burgeoning organized cybercrime that transcends borders. Issues such as cyber fraud, digital extortion, and illegal call centers are becoming major safety concerns, prompting governments to bolster collaboration and information sharing to effectively manage these threats.
Sri Lankan officials have indicated that further raids and investigations may occur in different regions of the country should additional ties to cybercriminal networks emerge. They have also urged property owners and hotel managers to diligently verify the identities and activities of foreign guests and tenants to mitigate the chances of illegal activities using tourist locales.
