Former Diplomats Call for Joint French-UK Action

More than 100 former senior French and British diplomats have called on their governments to work together to uphold international law in the Palestinian territories. In a letter published by French newspaper Le Monde, the former officials accused Israel of damaging prospects for an independent and viable Palestinian state.

102 Former Officials Sign the Letter

The letter was signed by 102 former diplomats and senior officials from France and the United Kingdom. Among the signatories were former British ambassadors to the United Nations Jeremy Greenstock and Emyr Jones Parry, along with former French Foreign Ministry Middle East directors Yves Aubin de la Messuziere and Denis Bauchard.

Call to Uphold International Law

The former diplomats argued that France and the UK have a special responsibility because of their historic roles in the Middle East and their positions as permanent members of the UN Security Council. They also pointed to the two countries’ recognition of a Palestinian state in 2025.

The signatories said governments should ensure that people responsible for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity are held accountable. They argued that joint action was necessary to demonstrate consistent application of international law.

Concerns Over West Bank Violence

The letter highlighted the escalation of violence in the occupied West Bank since the Gaza war began. It raised concerns about Israeli military operations, settlement activity and violence involving Israeli settlers.

France and Britain recently joined other countries in condemning new Israeli tenders for construction in the occupied West Bank. The former diplomats said continued settlement expansion and demolitions were undermining the possibility of a future Palestinian state.

Gaza War and Regional Tensions

Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza following the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel. The conflict has since caused a wider deterioration in security conditions, particularly in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967.

The former diplomats said the international community should continue pressing for respect for international law and protection of Palestinian rights while seeking a political path toward a lasting settlement.

Former Envoys Raise Strong Criticism

The letter used strong language to describe Israel’s policies in the Palestinian territories, including allegations concerning settlement expansion, house demolitions and settler violence. The former officials argued that these developments were damaging the prospects of Palestinian statehood.

They also questioned whether Israel’s actions were consistent with democratic principles and international obligations, saying governments should respond through coordinated diplomatic action.

The intervention by former French and British diplomats adds pressure on the governments of two major European powers to take a more coordinated position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Because France and the UK are permanent UN Security Council members, their diplomatic stance can carry significant international weight.
