New Record: 274 Climbers Reach Mt Everest Summit in a Day

Post by : Shweta

In an extraordinary achievement, 274 climbers successfully summited Mount Everest from the Nepalese side in a single day, breaking past records. This number, confirmed by Nepal's officials, surpasses the previous high of 223 climbers that was established in 2019.

Favorable weather conditions played a crucial role, allowing climbers to reach the peak of the world’s highest mountain, which stands at 8,848.86 meters. Each year, Everest, situated on the Nepal-China border, sees an influx of mountaineers during May's brief climbing window. This season, access to Everest from the Chinese side remained closed, making Nepal's Southern route the prime passageway for expeditions.

Among the successful summiteers were three Indians who joined a multitude of climbers from different nations during this landmark ascent. Nepal issued nearly 500 climbing permits this season, with a significant number going to Indian teams. Officials indicated that more climbers may achieve the summit before the current climbing season concludes later this month.

However, the surge in climbers has raised alarms about overcrowding in the perilous 'death zone,' where oxygen levels are critically low. Reports and photographs revealed long queues of climbers awaiting their turn to summit. Despite the congestion, expedition experts noted that effective organization, weather tracking, and oxygen availability helped avert serious incidents during this record-setting day.

This climbing season also highlighted remarkable individual achievements. Renowned Nepali Sherpa Kami Rita broke his own world record by summiting Everest for the 32nd time. Fellow climber Pasang Dawa Sherpa notched his 30th summit, while Lhakpa Sherpa reached the peak for the 11th time, marking the highest record for a woman.

Despite the dangers posed by extreme conditions, Mount Everest continues to allure climbers globally. The Nepalese government benefits significantly from the climbing permits and tourism related to Everest. Consequently, officials are likely to revisit discussions concerning climber safety, overcrowding, and potential regulations for future climbs.
