A 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitharama Raju district early Tuesday, producing brief tremors across parts of Visakhapatnam. The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) reported the event occurred at 4:19 am at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.
Officials said there were no reports of injuries or structural damage. Local administrations issued precautionary notices to residents as a standard safety measure.
The quake’s epicentre was located at latitude 18.02°N and longitude 82.58°E. “A mild earthquake was recorded in Alluri Sitharama Raju district, while tremors were felt in parts of Vizag,” an APSDMA spokesperson said.
Residents described feeling short-lived vibrations lasting only a few seconds, and normal activity resumed quickly. Disaster response teams in the affected districts were placed on standby to respond if needed.
Seismologists characterised the event as minor and in line with the area’s moderate seismicity. Authorities indicated there was no immediate threat of strong aftershocks or further disturbances.
Officials urged the public to remain calm and follow advised safety protocols should additional tremors occur.
