3.6-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Upper Siang in Arunachal Pradesh

3.6-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Upper Siang in Arunachal Pradesh

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In the early hours of Tuesday, a 3.6-magnitude earthquake rattled the Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) recorded the seismic event at 2:07 am IST.

The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, with precise coordinates of 28.85°N latitude and 95.24°E longitude. NCS confirmed these details via a post on X, identifying the epicenter within the Upper Siang region.

Currently, local authorities have reported no injuries or damage, and they are actively monitoring the situation to evaluate any potential impacts of this seismic occurrence. The northeastern region frequently experiences mild earthquakes, classified within a high-seismic zone.

Experts highlight that shallow earthquakes tend to yield stronger ground shaking compared to deeper ones. This phenomenon occurs because seismic waves travel a shorter distance to reach the surface, making even moderate tremors at shallow depths more perceptible and potentially hazardous to structures, factoring in the area’s population density and infrastructure.

This earthquake fuels ongoing concerns about seismic events in Arunachal Pradesh and surrounding northeastern states, where monitoring organizations frequently log minor to moderate tremors. Residents are reminded to stay informed about earthquake safety protocols in these high-risk areas.
