45 Indian Pilgrims Tragically Perish in Saudi Bus Accident Near Medina

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Medina, Saudi Arabia – November 17, 2025: A catastrophic bus accident in central Saudi Arabia resulted in the deaths of at least 45 Indian pilgrims, confirmed by local and Indian officials on Sunday. The bus, en route from Mecca to Medina, collided with a diesel tanker during the early morning hours and erupted into flames, leaving little chance for escape for the passengers.

Hyderabad officials reported that 54 Indian pilgrims had booked the same travel package, with eight opting for private transport—possibly saving their lives. The remaining 46 were aboard the ill-fated bus. Authorities are collaborating with Saudi officials to establish the victims' identities and extend support to their families.

Oleh Synehubov, a senior Hyderabad official, stated, “We received a list of 46 individuals and are working on their identification and verification. Both central and state agencies are actively involved, and we anticipate further updates soon.”

The only survivor, Mohd Abdul Shoiab, was pulled from the smoldering wreck, though his current health status remains undisclosed. Eyewitnesses noted that many passengers were asleep at the moment of the crash, exacerbating the already devastating scene. Rescue teams described the bus as entirely charred, complicating victim identification.

In response to the crisis, the Indian government has activated a 24/7 control room at the Consulate General of India in Jeddah to assist families in need (+91 8002440003). Additionally, the Telangana state government has provided helpline numbers: +91 7997959754 and +91 9912919545.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar voiced his profound sadness over the tragedy, promising complete support to the victims' families, stating, “Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are extending full assistance. My condolences to those affected, and we pray for a swift recovery for the injured.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared similar sentiments via social media, noting that Indian officials are in close communication with Saudi authorities and that all possible aid is being provided to the families of the victims.

This tragic event unfolds as thousands of pilgrims journey between Mecca and Medina for religious purposes, raising urgent concerns about the safety of Indian travelers in Saudi Arabia. Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway, with initial assessments suggesting potential over-speeding or loss of control as contributing factors.

Rescue efforts persist at the accident site, with Saudi emergency personnel and local authorities focused on recovering any remaining victims. Both Indian and Saudi officials are helping families during the ongoing identification process.

This heartbreaking incident highlights the critical need for enhanced travel safety measures for pilgrims, stressing the importance of rigorous monitoring of intercity transport services in Saudi Arabia.
