Strong 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Seram Island, Indonesia

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On Monday, Seram Island in Indonesia was rocked by a powerful earthquake registering a magnitude of 6.0. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences, the quake was recorded at a depth of 136 kilometers, but no casualties have been reported so far.

This seismic event occurred shortly after Mount Semeru, one of the country's most volatile volcanoes, erupted, sending ash clouds soaring up to two kilometers. The Indonesian volcanology agency has issued advisories urging residents to maintain a distance of at least 2.5 kilometers from the volcano due to the risk of falling ash and lava flows.

Mount Semeru, also referred to as Mahameru, has a notorious history of eruptions over the last 200 years, often leading to destruction in nearby communities and prompting evacuations. Its last significant eruption in December 2021 resulted in 51 fatalities and the destruction of hundreds of homes, displacing over 10,000 individuals.

Situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is inherently vulnerable to tectonic activity and volcanic eruptions. Just a few days prior, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Ambon in Maluku, underlining the ongoing seismic threats in the area.

Local authorities remain vigilant in monitoring the dual threats of earthquake and volcanic activity. Residents are encouraged to adhere to safety measures and remain vigilant for future alerts.
