Abu Dhabi Unveils 11 New Guidelines for Safe Hazardous Materials Management

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Abu Dhabi Hazardous Materials Management Centre has launched 11 essential guidelines intended to ensure the safe handling of hazardous materials, developed in conjunction with the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council.

This initiative represents a major advancement in enhancing the emirate’s safety protocols, boosting environmental protection efforts, and establishing uniform regulatory standards that reflect global best practices.

The guidelines aim to elevate the preparedness of workers across relevant sectors and facilities, enabling secure management of hazardous materials at all stages — from handling and storage to transportation and disposal. The framework seeks to mitigate incidents, enhance operational efficiency, and reduce environmental hazards.

His Excellency Khalfan Abdullah Khalfan Al Mansoori, Acting Director General of the Centre, noted that these guidelines are formulated based on the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), Revision 11. He remarked that Abu Dhabi stands as the first to embrace this latest version, further solidifying its global position in safety and regulatory standards.

He also stressed that explicit technical standards and requirements will foster a transparent regulatory landscape, increase investor confidence, and promote the growth of the private sector. The Centre is dedicated to continually updating its frameworks to stay aligned with global progressions and to stimulate innovation.

His Excellency Eng Fahad Ghareeb Al Shamsi, Acting Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, characterized the initiative as a strategic effort towards establishing a cohesive safety and quality framework. He emphasized that aligning local regulations with international standards boosts compliance, enhances collaboration among organizations, and elevates overall system effectiveness.

The guidelines constitute a comprehensive regulatory structure that translates laws into distinct and actionable procedures. They outline roles, responsibilities, and monitoring processes to ensure effective adherence across sectors managing hazardous materials.

Addressing all phases, including import, export, storage, manufacturing, packaging, trading, recycling, and disposal, the guidelines also tackle classification, labeling, and safety data mandates.

This initiative reinforces Abu Dhabi’s dedication to safety, sustainability, and proactive risk management, while further positioning it as a global frontrunner in regulatory excellence and environmental stewardship.
