The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), in partnership with global company Autotech and AD Ports Group, has launched the pilot operation of autonomous logistics and freight trucks in Abu Dhabi.
The project is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and marks a major step forward in smart mobility solutions.
Pilot Operations in KEZAD
The trial is taking place within Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD), where autonomous trucks are operating along dedicated routes. The project focuses on testing the performance of driverless trucks within a controlled industrial and logistics environment.
All pilot trips are being conducted under approved regulatory frameworks and operational standards to ensure safety and compliance.
AI Systems Adapted for Local Roads
During 2025, the developer, under the supervision of the Integrated Transport Centre, worked on adapting artificial intelligence-based autonomous driving systems to meet local road conditions and logistics transport requirements.
The aim is to ensure safe and smooth operations while meeting the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency. The pilot also evaluates the readiness of the technology for real-world deployment.
Boosting Smart Mobility and Logistics Efficiency
This initiative supports Abu Dhabi’s broader strategy to expand the use of autonomous systems beyond passenger transport to include freight and logistics. It also helps improve supply chain efficiency and operational performance across economic and industrial zones.
The project prepares the ground for the future commercial deployment of autonomous logistics services.
Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre, said the project represents an important regulatory milestone in advancing Abu Dhabi’s smart mobility ecosystem. He added that pilot programs like this allow authorities to test technical solutions in a safe and structured environment, helping shape future policies and regulations based on real-world data.
He also highlighted that such initiatives strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position as a regional leader in smart mobility and autonomous systems, in line with the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031.
Commitment to Innovation and Safety
The Integrated Transport Centre reaffirmed its commitment to working with local and international partners to support high-quality pilot projects in smart mobility. The focus remains on balancing innovation with safety and sustainability while serving the emirate’s economic and social needs in both the short and long term.
