His Excellency Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the UAE's Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, as well as ADNOC's Managing Director and Group CEO, has celebrated an important environmental achievement by planting ADNOC’s five millionth mangrove at the Al Nouf mangrove forest in Abu Dhabi.
This significant accomplishment indicates that ADNOC has surpassed the halfway point in its ambitious initiative to plant 10 million mangroves by 2030—a crucial part of the UAE’s broader objective to cultivate 100 million mangroves nationwide by decade's end.
The mangrove initiative is an essential element of ADNOC’s long-standing commitment to preserving the environment, fostering biodiversity, and employing nature-based solutions for climate change. Mangroves are critical for protecting coastlines, sequestering carbon, nurturing marine ecosystems, and boosting the resilience of coastal habitats.
During his remarks, Dr Al Jaber emphasized that environmental responsibility forms a cornerstone of ADNOC’s strategy and is vital to creating sustainable, long-term benefits for the UAE. He pointed out the company's remarkable strides towards its 2030 goal, leveraging advanced technologies that promote conservation while efficiently addressing global energy requirements.
Launched in 2023, ADNOC’s mangrove planting program utilizes AI-driven drone technology, developed locally, to facilitate rapid and effective mangrove planting. Supported by sophisticated monitoring systems and machine learning applications, the initiative tracks health, growth rates, and restoration success. This analytical method guarantees lasting ecological advantages from the planting efforts.
Community involvement has been integral to the project's success since its inception. In 2025, over 1,000 volunteers participated in planting sessions, dedicating countless hours to conservation efforts. Approximately 6,000 individuals have engaged in ADNOC’s mangrove planting, coastal clean-up, and biodiversity enhancement programs throughout Abu Dhabi since its launch.
Participants include students, community organizations, People of Determination, and ADNOC staff, all contributing significantly to the initiative at every stage.
In 2024, ADNOC collaborated with the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative, overseen by the Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD), to expedite mangrove restoration efforts, boost research, and promote increased participation from both the private sector and community members. These initiatives align with the UAE’s Plant the Emirates Program and the World Economic Forum’s One Trillion Trees Initiative.
With five million mangroves planted, ADNOC’s expansion program is becoming one of the largest corporate-driven nature restoration initiatives in the region, further solidifying Abu Dhabi’s role as a pioneer in environmental conservation and sustainable development.
