Chennai Schools Shut as Cyclone Ditwah's Aftermath Delivers Heavy Rains

Post by : Meena Hassan

Chennai and its neighboring regions are facing significant rainfall as the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah impact the area. Consequently, officials have announced the closure of schools and colleges across Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts to prioritize student safety.

This morning, northern Tamil Nadu experienced heavy downpours, while Chennai saw moderate rainfall persist throughout the day. The ongoing rains have led to waterlogging in several lower-lying regions, hindering daily activities and necessitating precautionary actions.

As reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system, which started as a cyclonic storm over the southwestern Bay of Bengal, downgraded to a well-defined low-pressure area off the coasts of northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry around 5:30 am IST on December 3, 2025. The IMD forecasts that the low-pressure system will gradually move southwestward along the northern coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, continuing to weaken over the next day.

Local officials are advising residents to stay indoors, limit unnecessary travel, and adhere to safety protocols. Emergency responders are on standby to manage any issues arising from waterlogging or flooding in at-risk areas.

The ongoing rain may also lead to traffic issues, power outages, and disruptions to everyday commerce. Residents are encouraged to take necessary precautions and stay informed through official weather updates.

Intermittent rainfall is expected to continue in Chennai and its surrounding districts over the next 24 hours, with residents monitoring the IMD for any further updates.
