Air Transat to Halt Flights as Pilots Consider 72-Hour Strike

Air Transat to Halt Flights as Pilots Consider 72-Hour Strike

Post by : Meena Hassan

Air Transat has announced a structured suspension of flights over the next three days due to a 72-hour strike notice from its pilots’ union, which could commence Wednesday morning.

The airline regards the strike notice as “premature” and emphasizes that contract negotiations are ongoing, offering “generous” proposals to the pilots. Both parties are hopeful that an agreement can be achieved prior to the strike starting.

Suspensions will begin on Monday, leading to a complete halt on Tuesday. Passengers currently abroad will be repatriated to avoid stranding anyone.

The pilots’ union stated that after several months of stalled discussions, a strike is essential due to issues regarding pay, benefits, operational rules, and job security in a prospective contract to replace the 2015 agreement.

Travelers have expressed worries about potential disruptions, with some opting to switch to other airlines for their flights. Federal mediators are monitoring the developments to assist both sides in rapidly reaching a compromise.

Experts in Air Passenger Rights noted that travelers may qualify for compensation of up to $1,000 if their flights are canceled within 14 days prior to the strike.

Air Transat operates 10 domestic routes and 63 international destinations in Europe, the Caribbean, the U.S. East Coast, South America, and North Africa.
