The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), part of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, has unveiled the Digital Arabic Library. This initiative, in partnership with audiobook and e-book publisher Arabookverse (ABV), was announced during ALC’s participation in the 77th Frankfurt Book Fair. The project aims to make thousands of Arabic publications available digitally and in audio formats for global readers.
Strategic Partnership to Promote Arabic Content
The collaboration with Arabookverse reflects the ALC’s commitment to advancing Arabic culture and the publishing industry. By providing access to digital and audio versions of Arabic works, the project supports readers worldwide and promotes a wider reach of Arabic content. It also aligns with the Centre’s long-term strategy to modernize and digitize Arabic publications through innovative initiatives.
Expanding Access to Arabic Readers Globally
Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of ALC, emphasized that the Digital Arabic Library will provide readers with innovative channels to access Arabic cultural content. This is significant, given the relatively low percentage of Arabic content available online compared to the number of Arabic speakers worldwide. The project seeks to bridge this gap and encourage engagement with Arabic literature.
Arabookverse Collaboration Strengthens Initiative
Ali Abdel-Moneim, Co-Founder and CEO of Arabookverse, highlighted the importance of the partnership. He stated that working with ALC, a pioneer in promoting the Arabic language, helps consolidate Arabic culture and connects readers and learners worldwide. The collaboration ensures high-quality content is delivered through modern digital platforms.
Governance and Quality Assurance Committees
To ensure the project’s success, ALC will establish a high-level steering committee. The committee will supervise workflow processes and coordinate the Digital Arabic Library’s development. In addition, advisory committees will oversee content quality and ensure that all publications meet the Centre’s rigorous standards, maintaining credibility and excellence.
Multi-Year Project and Long-Term Goals
The Digital Arabic Library is a multi-year initiative designed to provide sustainable support to Arabic literature. It not only promotes digitization but also fosters innovation in publishing, supporting the global visibility of Arabic books. The project complements other ALC initiatives, including quality programmes at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.
Future Impact on Arabic Publishing Industry
This initiative is expected to significantly boost the Arabic publishing industry by increasing the accessibility of Arabic content. By offering digital and audio formats, the project caters to modern reading habits, enhances cultural dissemination, and strengthens the international presence of Arabic literature.
