Alina Habba Exits as NJ US Attorney After Legal Decision

Post by : Meena Hassan

Alina Habba, who served as Donald Trump’s personal attorney, has stepped down from her position as the US attorney for New Jersey after a court determined her appointment was not lawful. This resignation comes in light of a ruling indicating that her temporary appointment, made without the necessary Senate approval, violated federal regulations.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi accepted Habba’s resignation but stated that she will stay on at the Justice Department as a senior adviser while looking to challenge the ruling. Habba remarked that she chose to resign “to safeguard the stability and integrity of the office,” reiterating her commitment to advocating for legitimate appointments across the country.

During her time in office, overall crime rates in Newark dropped by 20%, while Camden experienced its first summer without a homicide in 50 years. Habba previously played a significant role in high-stakes legal cases involving Trump, including the New York hush-money litigation.

Her departure underscores ongoing legal issues surrounding acting US attorney appointments, with multiple others chosen by Trump also facing similar judgments regarding their unlawful service.
